Apple explains iPhone 3G upgrade process

Apple this week began posting information for iPhone users intending to update their device to the new iPhone 3G. A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. Apple 3G iPhone War Breaks Out Lawyers Cal...

An Apple 3G iPhone war has broken out between the world's fastest 3G network run by Telstra and Optus who this week won a deal to sell the new Apple iPhone. Apple has been known for clearing out its inventory of a certain product ahead of a major upgrade. Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris declined to comment on reasons for the shortage and on Apple's plans for an update to the device, which is widely expected to be unveiled in June at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

iPhone 2.0 Upgrade Will Backfire On Apple

Keep the iPhone you already have - here's why. I had an interesting "iPhone 3G debate" over drinks this evening with a passionate, but less than thrilled, iPhone user. I'll call him "Don". Don, like every other iPhone owner, was debating whether or not to upgrade to the new iPhone 3G or stick with the iPhone he already had. Don's verdict? Keep the current iPhone. The reason? Freedom of choice of cell phone carriers, and iPhone 2.0 software works fine on his existing iPhone.

America Movil Secures iPhone Deal; Unlocked iPhones Continue To Dog Apple And Partners

The Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone deals are coming in thick and fast. Days after Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) announced a 10-country deal to carry the iPhone, and Telecom Italia said it too would sell the device in Italy, comes news that Mexico telecoms firm America Movil will bring the device to its Latin American operations later this year, which includes over a dozen countries. Again, like the Vodafone deal, no mention if this is exclusive or not. Bloomberg reports, however, that Apple’s latest agreement won’t have a significant impact on iPhone sales. After losing out to its rival O2 last year, Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) has struck a deal with Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) to sell the iPhone in ten countries, reports Reuters. Those countries include Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey, according to the operator, which didn’t give any more details on the agreement. When the iPhone first launched in Europe last fall, Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin called the 2.5 G handset a “pretty poor experience”. The operator also ended up suing O2 in Germany, alleging that its rival network didn’t have the right to sell the iPhone exclusively. Indeed, in a break with Apple’s usual practice Vodafone’s deal in Italy isn’t an exclusive, as Telecom Italia will also sell the handset.

Apple Patent Hints At Plans For iPhone IM

The US Patent Office has approved an Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) patent for what looks like an instant messenger application for the iPhone, with some improvements over its SMS feature, such as a word predicter which suggests more words. This appears to be a different than the one reported in April. That’s all well and good—a native IM application is something that a lot of people began clamouring for once the iPhone was released, and it would be a nice feature to introduce with the next version of the iPhone. Apple Insider has some good details on the patent—and it’s important to remember that it’s just a patent and a lot of patents don’t lead to applications. With Apple opening the iPhone to third parties it’s a sure bet that the current big IM companies will be putting their chat programs on the iPhone, so any new service would ha
