Five cutting-edge phone designs for 2009 and beyond

LG Japan announced the winners of its first-ever Mobile Design Contest last week by showcasing prototypes for cutting-edge phone designs at the Tokyo Designers Week convention. All of the handset designs were submitted by outside parties, though LG cautions that we shouldn't expect any of them to hit the market anytime soon. In this slideshow, we'll examine which phone designs took home prizes, as well as the features that differentiate them from today's smartphones such as the iPhone and the BlackBerry Storm. The Planet Phone: At first glance, this handset looks more like a powder makeup kit than a mobile phone. But its unique circular design features several LEDs on the top half of the phone that each represent a different person within your phone directory.

Nokia Smartphone Development List Leaked

Our news radar picked up something pretty interesting from Engadget this morning, specifically related to the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia. Apparently, a list of Nokia devices in development (or developed) has landed in Engadget's hands, and we had quite an interesting read. Whilst we await the arrival of the first Nokia touch screen device, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic or more commonly known as the Nokia Tube, we noticed that there'll definitely be more devices supporting the Symbian S60 V5.0 OS, one of which includes a possible device codenamed the Corolla with an 8-megapixel camera and a VGA screen (finally).

Orascom Telecom and Nokia have announced a cooperation to make Nokia's mobile content platform Ovi available to OT customers. Under the collaboration, Nokia devices will provide access to both companies' selected services, such as Nokia Maps, Nokia N-Gage and music, with more services to follow. Nokia and Orascom Telecom will further enhance the collaboration on mobile internet services. Orascom Telecom operates GSM networks in Algeria (Djezzy), Pakistan (Mobilink), Egypt (Mobinil), Tunisia (Tunisiana), Bangladesh (Banglalink) and Zimbabwe (Telecel Zimbabwe). Orascom Telecom is also about to launch a network in North Korea - whether the agreement includes selling mobile content into that country was not clarified.

The iPhone vs. Google Phone: No Contest

Recently, I stopped by a local T-Mobile store, the home of the new G1 phone. This is the so-called Google phone, the mobile device with Google's Android operating system. Many in the press have anointed the Google phone as a potential "iPhone killer." That is, a device capable of knocking the iPhone off its pedestal as the most desirable and most well-reviewed smartphone on the market. While the iPhone is not yet the overall leader in sales, it's moving along here as well; latest reports show that the iPhone has surpassed RIM's Blackberry to reach second place in smartphone rankings (and an even more recent report has the iPhone as the #1 U.S. consumer phone, besting even Motorola's RAZR).

LG Rountable Hypes HD, Cell Phone/Digital Camera Convergence

According to LG, the future of HD video, mobile phone cameras, and the point-and-shoot varietals couldn't be more, well, the same. At a round table event in London this past week, the company hyped up convergence between the industries, and used its camera-happy KC-910 to show why there is no reason why mobiles should not overtake or absorb digital cameras in the near future. When one looks at what the KC-910 (aka Renoir) will bring to the cell phone market, it's hard not to agree. As we've detailed here before, this "phone" comes equipped with an 8-megapixel cam with a Schneider-Kreuznach lens and xenon flash. ISO is rated up to 1600, and it also does VGA video at 30fps as well as high-speed 120fps filming (at QVGA resolution).
