If you wondered whether sellers had legitimate concerns over eBay's new PayPal-only policy in Australia, you need only read Kevin Tyerman's submission to that country's Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to understand the issues they believe are at stake. Tyerman's 7-page document - complete with footnotes and citations - is accessible on the ACCC website along with about 350 others, many of them from eBay sellers.

At Apple’s (NSDQ: AAPL) Macworld event in mid-January, Steve Jobs unveiled iTunes movie rental downloads with the promise that the service would offer 1,000 titles by the end of February. Well, February’s over and as News.com points out (via Macworld), iTunes has only 399 movies available for download on Mac computers (only 351 can be accessed through Apple TV). Granted, the service is still fairly new. But with Netflix’s (NSDQ: NFLX) roughly 6,000 movies available for PC downloads, Apple’s got a ways to go. If it can’t add substantially add to its iTunes rental library quickly, users might eventually get tired of waiting.

Since the iPhone's only shipped in a few areas so far, it makes sense that Apple's only provided keyboard dictionaries for the languages used in those countries. These dictionaries prevent and correct mistakes that pop up when you're typing on the iPhone's virtual keyboard. If you'd prefer or, as is likelier the case, need to type in a language other than one Apple supports (for instance, your using an unlocked iPhone in Finland), a keyboard hack available at iPhoneDict just might be for you. At the site, you'll find iPhone keyboard dictionaries in Danish, Dutch, Finnish andPortuguese, languages currently not supported by Apple. These dictionaries only work with those iPhones that have been jailbreaked to run unofficial native iPhone software, however.

bunratty writes "Firefox 3 Beta 5 was released today. This last beta release sports performance-boosting improved connection parallelism. Not only has 'the memory leak' been fixed: Firefox now uses less memory than other browsers. This is not only according to Mozilla developers, but CyberNet and The Browser World as well. As for the Acid3 test, Firefox 3 Beta 5 scores only 71/100 compared to 75/100 for Safari 3.1 and 79/100 for the latest Opera 9.5 snapshot. The final release of Firefox 3 is expected in June."

juct writes "Manufacturers of USB sticks and cards with fingerprint readers promise us that their data safes can only be opened with the right fingerprint. In their tests, heise Security found that it is easy to bypass the authentication and get access to the protected data. This works by sending a single USB command, using the open source tool PLscsi, that changes the accessible partition. They found the vulnerability in several USB sticks that use the same chipset. The article concludes: 'The fingerprint sensors in the products mentioned above apparently only serve one purpose: they mislead interested buyers. They do not provide any significant level of protection. We can only recommend that these products not be purchased.'"

Paradox Interactive, the company who've funded games like City Life and developed the Europa Universalis series announced a very special agreement today - the release of its "Europa" engine to the public gaming community. If you thought the $14.95-99.95/mo. Blade3D engine was good news, get this: Europa is free. Not only that, independent developers wanting to get in on the action receive the same financial deals major developers do with online PC game download site GamersGate. Of course there will be a few minimum criteria for eligibility, but other than that, it's anyone's game (pun accidental).

(Nanowerk 'Slow' News) In our Slow News Friday entry from a few weeks ago we brought you the "Chantecaille Nano Gold Energizing Cream" at $420 for 1.7 ounces. Fortunately we found a much more affordable alternative at only $149.95 for 1.5 ounces (1 ounce = 28.35 grams). So rather than $8.70 per gram you can get nanotechnology face cream for only $3.20 per gram.

whitehartstag writes to mention that Microsoft has announced their new Hyper-V as feature-complete. Unfortunately the list of supported systems is disappointingly short. "No offense to SUSE Enterprise Server crowd, but only providing SUSE support in Hyper-V is a huge mistake. By not supporting Red Hat, Fedora, CentOS, and BSD, Microsoft is telling us Hyper-V is a Microsoft only technology. More Mt. Redmond, Microsoft center of the universe thinking. That's disappointing. Sure, if you are a Microsoft only shop, Hyper-V will be an option for virtualization. But so will VMware and XenServer. But if you run a mixed shop, Hyper-V won't solve your problems alone — you'll have to also add VMware or Xen to your virtualized data center portfolio. Or just go with VMware and Xen and forego Hyper-V.

Ian Lamont writes "The FCC has fined 11 retailers and television manufacturers for violating rules relating to the 2009 digital TV transition. Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, Sears, Kmart, and Wal-Mart supposedly failed to place notices near analog-only TV sets warning customers that the sets did not have digital tuners. In part, the required notice reads: 'This television receiver has only an analog broadcast tuner and will require a converter box after February 17, 2009, to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna because of the Nation's transition to digital broadcasting. Analog-only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services, gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products.' The fines total $6.

Reading something like this makes me hopeful that we're no longer in the infant stage of our understanding of our solar system: we've been patient and observant while growing in our knowledge. Scientists have discovered a wave pattern, or oscillation, in Saturn's atmosphere only visible from Earth every 15 years. This discovery was made only because we've been studying Saturn from ground based telescopes for about 22 years. Combined with the Cassini spacecraft's observations of temperature changes in the giant planet's atmosphere over time, we're gaining a better understanding of Saturn and discovering not only how unique it is, but also that Saturn has something in common with Earth. Our own planet has these oscillations too, and so does Jupiter.

In this version, they added a new copy mode called "Selected episodes". This copy mode is designed for episodic DVDs on which there're usually several titles which nearly have the same playback time and each title is for an episode. With "Selected episodes" copy mode, you may choose any episodes you wanted to copy. Comparing with "Only the main movie" mode, this mode is more flexible especially on burning multiple episodes to a disc, since "Only the main movie" mode only allows you to copy one episode at one time.

An application called iPhoneRing ToneMaker allows you to create your own ringtones from any MP3, WAV or OGG music file in your collection. The software automatically transfer the tones to iTunes or your iPhones. Apple makes you pay for ringtones, even if you already own the song. Not so with this software. The developer says the whole process takes only 30 seconds per tone. Best of all, you can supposedly do all of this without hacking or jailbreaking. Normally $19.95, the application is on sale now for $14.95.

"O.k., we know that iPod shuffle isn't exactly something new – after all it was released 16 months ago. But with the release of the 2 GB model last month the price of the 1 GB dropped dramatically, being easily found for $50 at Apple, BestBuy, Circuit City and Amazon.com. In this review we will explore Apple's cheapest iPod to date. iPod shuffle isn't only the cheapest MP3 player from Apple, but also the smallest and lightest, measuring only 1.07" (2.73 cm) x 1.62" (4.12 cm) x 0.41" (1.05 cm) (H x W x D) and weighting only half ounce (15.6 grams), making it the most discreet iPod, which is a very desirable feature if you want to use it for jogging, biking or working out, if you don't want something bulky inside your pocket or if you simply just don't like the idea of flashing your iPod around whenever you want to select a song (this model
