"The Nintendo Wii has turned the gaming world on its head, with motion-sensitive controls and family-friendly games. The Nintendo DS has had a good run, too, dominating the market for handheld gaming gizmos despite determined assaults by Sony and Nokia," Brian Caulfield writes for Forbes.

(Review) - Microsoft jumps onboard with high-end gaming mice with its newly released Sidewinder. For lack of a better word, it’s interesting, and certainly a noteworthy competitor to Logitech’s G5 gaming mouse. Just like Logitech’s G5, the Sidewinder is USB 2.0, wired and has a customizable weight kit. Not to mention, it offers 2,000dpi, the highest resolution in gaming mice to date. However, there are dissimilarities that position Microsoft’s Sidewinder in a category of its own.

Apple, maker of the iPod media player, and CBS were sued for trademark infringement by closely held computer-accessory firm Man & Machine over the name of Apple's wireless "Mighty Mouse" device. Apple started selling computer mice under the name "Mighty Mouse" more than a year after Man & Machine began selling waterproof and chemical-resistant computer mice to labs and hospitals under that name in 2004, according to the suit filed Tuesday in Greenbelt, Md. Man & Machine claims its earlier use trumps Apple's, even though Apple sells more products. The names of both products play on the 1942 animated super hero mouse whose trademark rights are partly owned by CBS. New York-based CBS is accused of licensing "Mighty Mouse" to Apple for computer devices when its trademark doesn't cover such goods.

99BottlesOfBeerInMyF writes "AppleInsider is running an article about Apple's new SproutCore Web application development framework, utilizing Javascript and some nifty HTML 5 to offer a 'Cocoa-inspired' way to create powerful Web applications. Apple built on the OSS SproutIt framework developed for an online e-mail manager called 'Mailroom.' Apple used this framework to build their new Web application suite (replacing .Mac) called MobileMe. Since SproutCore applications rely on JavaScript, it seems Apple had good reason to focus on Squirrelfish for faster JavaScript interpretation in Webkit. Apple hosted a session last Friday at WWDC introducing SproutCore to developers, but obviously NDAs prevent developers from revealing the details of that presentation.

An anonymous reader lets us know about a recent analysis of retail computer sales numbers that shines a spotlight on Apple's sales growth as the PC market has flattened. In the lucrative >$1,000 PC segment, in the first quarter of 2008, Apple's retail market share was 66%. This includes a 64% market share for laptops and a market share for desktops of 70%. The article attributes the bulk of this success to Apple's stores. Fortune picked up this report and pointed out the somewhat obvious fact that the >$1,000 PC segment is Apple's by default, since Dell, HP, and Lenovo sell the bulk of their machines in the $500-$750 range, and Apple has only one model selling for less than $1,000. As the analyst said, "If you don't give people a choice [in the Apple stores], people will spend more.

recoiledsnake writes "We have heard about lots of talented developers jumping ship from Microsoft to Google, but is the trend beginning to turn? Dare Obasanjo (a Microsoft employee) writes about a few high-profile people picking Microsoft over Google — either making the jump directly, or choosing Microsoft after receiving offers at both. Sergey Solyanik is back to Microsoft and he primarily gripes about the culture and lack of career development at Google. He writes, 'Everything is pretty much run by [engineering] — PMs and testers are conspicuously absent from the process. Google as an organization is not geared — culturally — to delivering enterprise class reliability to its user applications.' Apple's apparently so fed up with the high pricing that Rogers is shoving into Canadian iPhone owners' faces that there will be no iPhone 3Gs sold at Apple Stores in Canada this Friday. This follows up Apple's previous action of diverting stock from Canada to Europe, and really sets the tone that they're unhappy with Rogers' $60 for 150 minutes, 75 SMS messages and 400MB data plan. So what's the deal? Canadians who still want one will have to line up early to get one of the 10-20 units per store that Rogers is getting. If we were you, we'd stay home and wait for Rogers to admit defeat, stop slapping its customers in the face and lower its prices. [Apple Insider]

Apple, the maker of the iPod media player, sued Atico International USA claiming it infringed five patents for accessories used with the device. Apple seeks a jury trial and an order to stop Atico from selling infringing products in the United States, according to papers filed yesterday in federal court in Wilmington, Del. Apple also alleges trademark infringement and unfair competition. "The iPod's success has spawned an enormous demand for iPod-compatible accessories" including docking stations, speakers and cables, Apple said in the complaint. Atico is selling unlicensed versions of the products, costing Apple money and harming its reputation, the company said. The patents cover accessory designs and a system for transferring information.

(RTTNews) - Software giant Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said Wednesday that it will offer ad-funded cash rebates to customers who find and purchase products through a new program called Microsoft Live Search cashback. This is one of the latest efforts of Microsoft to increase its market share in searching, which is dominated by Google (GOOG). Microsoft has roped in companies such as eBay Inc. (EBAY), Barnes & Noble.com (BKS), Overstock.com Inc. (OSTK), and Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD) as partners in the new program. The Live Search cashback portfolio includes more than 10 million products from more than 700 merchants, including more than 13 of the top 40 U.S. retailers. Microsoft also said it has delivered a new Live Search travel destination, Live Search Farecast in order to find the best travel deals on the Web.

When the news broke in April that Apple had purchased low-power chipmaker PA Semi, savvy Apple watchers quickly zeroed in on the reason for the purchase that seemed to make the most sense: Apple could use PA Semi's extremely talented team of experience low-power processor designers to make chips for its iPhone and iPod lines. (The other option, that Apple would somehow use PA Semi's dual-core PowerPC products, was never realistic.) Well, it turns out that this speculation was correct, and Apple will indeed be drawing on PA Semi's formidable design talent in order to fill the iPhone with custom system-on-chip (SoC) parts that will be fabricated by an as yet unnamed manufacturing partner.

One of the things that sets Apple apart from other retailers is the in-house music events they hold at their stores, which include the iTunes Live concerts series. This month, in recognition of Black Music Month, Apple stores are hosting a variety of concerts around the country featuring various African American artists. The concerts are being held primarily in larger cities such as Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, New York, and Santa Monica. One smaller venue will be getting a single show: the Apple Store, Somerset, in Troy, Michigan. Apple's recently opened Boston shop, now the largest Apple Store in the world, is noticeably missing from the list of venues.

The US Patent Office has approved an Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) patent for what looks like an instant messenger application for the iPhone, with some improvements over its SMS feature, such as a word predicter which suggests more words. This appears to be a different than the one reported in April. That’s all well and good—a native IM application is something that a lot of people began clamouring for once the iPhone was released, and it would be a nice feature to introduce with the next version of the iPhone. Apple Insider has some good details on the patent—and it’s important to remember that it’s just a patent and a lot of patents don’t lead to applications. With Apple opening the iPhone to third parties it’s a sure bet that the current big IM companies will be putting their chat programs on the iPhone, so any new service would ha
