snydeq writes "Fatal Exception's Neil McAllister raises questions regarding the transforming nature of the Web now that Tim Berners-Lee's early vision has been supplanted by today's much more complex model. AJAX, Google Web Toolkit, Flash and Silverlight all have McAllister asking, 'Is [the Web] still the Web if you can't navigate directly to specific content? Is it still the Web if the content can't be indexed and searched? Is it still the Web if you can only view the application on certain clients or devices? Is it still the Web if you can't view source?' Such questions bely a much bigger question for Web developers, McAllister writes. If today's RIAs no longer resemble the 'Web,' then should we be shoehorning these apps into the Web's infrastructure, or is the problem that the client platforms simply aren't evolving fast enough to meet

Mobile games fall into one of three categories: 1) over-complicated versions of well known console games in no way suited to the small screen and unresponsive phone keyboard. 2) 1980s arcade games - the sheer ennui threatens to overwhelm. 3) Joyously new and inventive titles that bear in mind the staccato usage and simple controls necessary to work on a phone. So few fall into the last camp that mobile games are near worth ignoring. Will Apple's promised 160 iPhone games change that? Early signs are at least positive, with the iPhone remix of that megalith of galactic evolution, Spore, shaping into something intriguing; Bomberman, while unproven on a touch screen, is normally pretty reliable; LocoRoco-alike Rolando promises some cute tilt-based gaming and Super Monkey Ball already has punters forming a virtual queue round the block.

In the past, web applications were limited because a web page had to be reloaded (or another page loaded in its place) in order for new data to be obtained. Other methods were available (without loading another page), but the techniques werent well supported and had a tendency to be buggy. In recent months, a technique that had not been widely supported in the past has become available to a large number of web surfers, giving developers more freedom to develop cutting-edge web applications. These applications, which asynchronously retrieve XML data via JavaScript, are affectionately known as Ajax applications (Asynchronous Javascript and XML applications). In this article, I will explain how to retrieve a remote XML file via Ajax to update a web page, and as this series continues, I will discuss more ways that Ajax technology can be us

Gravy Monkey writes "It's not too difficult to criticize the quality of many third-party Wii games — whether they're unique titles, bad licenses or lazy ports to the new system. However, will this change as more quality third-party games appear on the Wii? Recently, Wiiware title 'Lost Winds' picked up some great reviews, as did the Blastworks game. The recent review of a new game called Order Up on IGN caught my attention because they praised it as the way all casual games should be made. Is this the beginning of a new era for Wii games where quality casual games from third parties manage to grab the attention of both mainstream and hardcore gamers alike, instead of being a console where only first-party titles sell?"

A new way to search the web was unveiled on Sunday. The new service, called Cuil (sounds like "cool"), is the brainchild of four former Google search experts. What Cuil brings to the table is a new way to search based on each page's content instead of relying on links and traffic patterns. Cuil claims that its technology can index a greater portion of the Web far cheaper and faster than can Google. In fact, Cuil claims to have indexed 120 billion Web pages compared to the 40 billion currently indexed by Google. Another difference is that Cuil claims it has no need to store user information based on previous web searches because it focuses on content and not click history. Whether it can post a serious threat to Google remains to be seen as challenging the giant is a daunting task as even the likes of Microsoft have discovered.

alphadogg writes "A new generation of mobile Web browsers is finally making the Web a reality on handheld devices. The latest example is last week's beta launch of Opera Mobile 9.5, a native Web browser for high-end smartphones. It's an evolutionary release for the Norwegian software company, but it comes just days after Apple's iPhone 3G, with its highly capable Safari browser, went on sale. Other brand-new entrants, such as Mobile Firefox and Skyfire, are expected later this year, at least in beta form. But the evolving mobile browsers are only one part of the picture. Mobile browsing is affected by the client hardware, ranging from the processor to the kind of wireless network being used, all of which have improved markedly. It's also affected by the design of Web sites being targeted, and there's new attention being focused on optimiz
