iPhone 3G vs. BlackBerry Bold: First Head to Head

There are basically two camps on the year's most anticipated phone: iPhone 3G or BlackBerry Bold. They are different phones with different core audiences, which largely comes down to keyboard preferences. But Boy Genius gives us a lot to chew on anyway in the first live head-to-head (and not just the photos). The shockers are that the newly plastic iPhone 3G has a better build quality and the Bold's screen is better, thanks to a dense pixel-per-inch ratio.

Apple explains iPhone 3G upgrade process

Apple this week began posting information for iPhone users intending to update their device to the new iPhone 3G. A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. The instructions indicate that iPhone users in the US will not need to transfer their SIM card (a new one will be provided with the iPhone 3G) and describes how to transfer settings, personal info, SMS messages, and other data to the new device using iTunes' backup iPhone feature.

Orange France said it had sold 116,000 Apple iPhone 3G smartphones since it launched the product in the middle of July, compared to taking nearly five months to sell 100,000 units of the first version of the iPhone, writes Les Echos. The success of the new version is partly attributed to Orange's decision to offer it through retailers such as Fnac, Darty and Auchan. It only sold the first iPhone at Orange stores. According to Orange, half of its iPhone 3G users first had the original version. Orange is selling the 3G phone for EUR 149 compared to the first version's retail price of EUR 399. Rival mobile operator SFR said that 40,000 of its subscribers had a first generation iPhone and between 1,500 and 2,000 owned the iPhone 3G. The operator made concessions to some of its clients by partially reimbursing the price of iPhones bought as st

In fact, first-generation iPhones can be updated to use the iPhone 2.0 software, which will give a lot of the software capabilities of iPhone 3G to its predecessor. The BlackBerry Bold has been out in Chile and Germany and drops in Canada tomorrow, so as much as analysts talk out of their ass, Citigroup analyst Jim Suva might not just be blowing hot air when he says that the Bold is plagued by the same 3G connection issues as the iPhone 3G (though 2.0.2 might've made them worse still). Review: The iPhone 3G was Worth the Wait

Computerworld — As I write this, my new white 16GB iPhone 3G is in the process of syncing about 10GB of music from my iTunes library. This is my second sync. Although I was one of the lucky ones able to both buy and eventually activate an iPhone 3G on Friday, I at first opted to copy over the same paltry 2GB of music that was stored on my first-generation 4GB iPhone along with my e-mail accounts and a handful of applications from the App Store.
