Filesharing on Unlocked iPhones

People with unlocked iPhone and iPod Touch gadgets are happy to find that they can now share music and media files through a new application. Songs can be downloaded via a p2p network with the average Wi-Fi download speed being approximately three minutes. Movie downloads are taking a little over an hour on the average iPhone using this new application. Download speeds are about twice as fast for those people using the AT&T EDGE network rather than a standard Wi-Fi connection. The application is still in beta, the speeds aren't good enough for most people and there are apparently some bugs to work out but people who love their iPhones feel that this is a step in the right direction for media sharing.

Apple smiles as unlocked iPhones abound

So if you're Apple--and I realize that it's unfair of me to make you pretend you're a multinational corporation worth billions, but I'm cruel that way--what happens when you realize that many of the 5.4 million iPhones you've sold in the past 10 months haven't been activated on the networks of any of your worldwide cellular partners?

America Movil Secures iPhone Deal; Unlocked iPhones Continue To Dog Apple And Partners

The Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPhone deals are coming in thick and fast. Days after Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) announced a 10-country deal to carry the iPhone, and Telecom Italia said it too would sell the device in Italy, comes news that Mexico telecoms firm America Movil will bring the device to its Latin American operations later this year, which includes over a dozen countries. Again, like the Vodafone deal, no mention if this is exclusive or not. Bloomberg reports, however, that Apple’s latest agreement won’t have a significant impact on iPhone sales. According to Yankee Group analyst Willy Swain most people in the region who can afford the device already have one—that is an unlocked one.

image FBR Research analyst Craig Berger is estimating more than 15 million 3G iPhones plus two million first gen iPhones will be sold in 2008. That’sabove the 10 million iPhones Apple hoped to sell this year, and above the 11 million iPhones Berger had modeled in May, notes Silicon Valley Insider.

Sony Center store network expects 25% increase

New Link, the company that runs the Sony Center store network, forecasts a 25% increase in electronics sales this year, from around 17 million euros last year. In 2007, the company saw a 55% turnover increase. "I don't think we can match last year's growth rate. Despite the slowdown of the market's growth rate, I think we will be able to reach a 25-30% growth rate on 2007, in the second part of the year," said Nicolae Dumitrescu, sales manager of Sony Center. The market growth rate seen in the first

iPhone's Uncertain Future Sends Synchronoss Into Tailspin

Synchronoss posted a healthy quarterly report on Tuesday, but by Wednesday morning shares of the N.J.-based communication software provider were sinking like bricks, losing 43 percent. AT&T, a customer that provided nearly three quarters of Synchronoss' revenue last quarter, may not have such an exclusive grip on the iPhone in coming months, and uncertainty has scared away investors.

iPhones for less than $200?

I got an E-mail from BusinessWeek this morning titled, "An iPhone for $199" and, of course, I was very interested. Times are financially tight for my wife and me right now and the $499 or $399 iPhones were just too expensive. And the question was always: Do we really need them? I'm now paying half the monthly rate for two cell phones that AT&T charges for one iPhone. The iPhones are still something of a luxury and the utility for me isn't quite clear. Paying $50 per month for two cell phones while AT&T is charging $90 per iPhone is something a budget-minded person should think about.

iPhone Ambiguity For Synchronoss

Shares of Synchronoss Technologies (nasdaq: SNCR - news - people ) sank 17.1%, or $2.28, to close at $11.03, in the wake of news that the new iPhone would be activated in-store, rather than using an online service managed by the software company. Synchronoss noted that it had anticipated that development in its previous guidance.

T-Mobile: 100,000+ iPhones sold in Germany

T-Mobile has sold over 100,000 iPhones in Germany, according to the head of the carrier's parent company, Deutsche Telekom. CEO Rene Obermann made the statement Thursday as a follow-up to statistics from January, which indicated that it had sold 70,000 iPhones since the device's local debut in early November of 2007. While the figure points to a relative slowdown in sales, T-Mobile board member Hamid Akhavan says that this is "about in line" with corporate targets.
