Report: AT&T to cut iPhone price to $199

According to a report in Fortune, AT&T is planning to reduce the price of Apple's upcoming 3G iPhone to $199 through a $200 subsidy. Apple is expected to announce two version of the 3G iPhone, according to the report: an 8GB iPhone for $399 and a 16GB iPhone for $499. By reducing the pricepoints by $200, AT&T will be putting the popular handset within reach of more subscribers spending limits. Since iPhone users have proven to be heavy data users, it follows that recouping the subsidy wouldn't take too long for AT&T.

Singapore Telecom to launch Apple's iPhone in September - report

SINGAPORE (Thomson Financial) - Singapore Telecommunications Ltd is launching iPhone in September, but the telco has declined to confirm or deny that it has struck a deal with iPhone maker Apple Inc, local broadcaster Channel News Asia reported, citing industry sources. A spokesman from SingTel declined to comment on the report. While Apple is targeting to sell 10 million iPhone units this year in Asia, talks with telcos around the region have dragged since last year over Apple's unprecedented demand that it be given a revenue share from each iPhone sold to mobile phone subscribers. 'The news, if true, is positive for SingTel. Given iPhone's (appeal to consumers), we believe iPhone would lead to higher market share for SingTel. However, the impact on SingTel's bottom line should not be very significant given Apple's hard bargaining tenden

T-Mobile planning to launch iPhone in Austria tomorrow

It was just a couple weeks ago when we got wind that the iPhone's latest firmware had hints of an Austria launch sometime soon under T-Mobile. T-Mobile, which has never really been good at that whole web security thing, has put up a "private" site that apparently prepares for the iPhone's impending launch. When you click to get more details about the iPhone, you're directed to http://www.t-mobile.at/iphone/ which, at current writing, is still up.

Unreleased iPhone 2.0 May Already Be Hacked

The as-yet unreleased second iteration of iPhone hardware may already be compromised, reports Engadget and News.com. Members of the 'iPhone Dev Team' have (supposedly) made use of the recently released SDK to gin up a Beta 2.0 software hack. "Unlike previous hacks, this one isn't specific to the latest firmware version, it exploits the way that Apple designed the iPhone's main bootloader. According to the iPhone Dev Team, the iPhone verifies whether or not firmware code has been signed with an RSA certificate before allowing it to be written to memory. The team has apparently figured out a way to disable that check and allow unsigned code to be written to memory."

Gartner changes its iPhone tune following SDK

When the iPhone was launched, and even up until the announcement of the new enterprise functionality, many people were skeptical of the iPhone as a business device. Research firm Gartner in particular had some disparaging remarks about the iPhone, saying its adoption by companies would be "a very serious mistake." But now that the iPhone is set to gain Exchange support and a whole host of other business features, Gartner is changing it's tune (as reported by The iPod Observer) and now has a more positive outlook for the iPhone's use by businesses.

Apple Mulling a Clamshell iPhone

Apple's iPhone launch caused a wave of excitement that even now refuses to die down. The company is now planning to ride on this with a "clamshell iPhone". Yes, "clamshell iPhone" which will be smaller -- likely half the size of the iPhone, but will take a couple of years to go to market.

3G iPhone Watch: AT&T discourages vacations

According to an internal AT&T memo that Boy Genius Report obtained, the carrier is making very similar preparations for "an exciting new promotion/product launch" right around the one year anniversary of the iPhone in June. AT&T sent a memo to employees discouraging them from taking vacations between June 15 and July 15. The 3G version of the iPhone is expected to launch during that period and AT&T said it expects "heavier than normal customer traffic" in its stores during those four weeks. The memo, however, does not specifically announce the coming of a 3G iPhone. The iPhone 2.0 software is also set to launch this summer and the company believes the new software will make the iPhone more appealing to the enterprise.

Hack Brings International Dictionaries to iPhone

Since the iPhone's only shipped in a few areas so far, it makes sense that Apple's only provided keyboard dictionaries for the languages used in those countries. These dictionaries prevent and correct mistakes that pop up when you're typing on the iPhone's virtual keyboard. If you'd prefer or, as is likelier the case, need to type in a language other than one Apple supports (for instance, your using an unlocked iPhone in Finland), a keyboard hack available at iPhoneDict just might be for you. At the site, you'll find iPhone keyboard dictionaries in Danish, Dutch, Finnish andPortuguese, languages currently not supported by Apple. These dictionaries only work with those iPhones that have been jailbreaked to run unofficial native iPhone software, however.

Microsoft Mulls Building iPhone Apps

It was only inevitable that Microsoft would be trying to cash in on the popularity of the iPhone, especially after the release of the iPhone SDK. The iPhone SDK gives Microsoft the opportunity to jump on the millions of people using the iPhone without having to work with Apple, at least directly. The SDK gives Microsoft the ability to produce suites of Office and other applications for the iPhone.
