I know that if you are using the FORM method you can customize your login page. Also there are some restrictions on the fields name like j_security_check or j_username and j_password. Also I know how to create a custom Realm and install it in tomcat, lets say. From what I know when the user is accessing a secure page the server sends back to the browser an HTTP code saying that he has to provide authentication to see that page. Then it is redirected to the login page. When he hits the login button the server executes the Realm implementation, that actually verify the username password based on the realm.
