Appleâ?"s App Store a candy store for iPhone, iPod touch

"The App Store–oh, man, the App Store. It’s a candy store, dude. It’s 550 free or cheap add-on programs that make the iPhone (or the iPod Touch) do absolutely amazing things…stunts a cellphone has no right to perform," David Pogue blogs for The New York Times.

iPhone App Store Sells $30 Million Worth Of Apps In First Month

Before the App Store for Apple's iPhone went live it had been predicted by some analysts to have the potential to become a $1 billion business by 2009. It is now being reported that Apple shifted an impressive $30 million worth of software in the first month, which would make those predictions seem entirely possible. Steve Jobs has pointed out that Apple only receive 30% of the money made from the app store (though 30% still seems a nice chunk to me), with 70% going to the app developers. An example of a hugely successful application is Sega's Super Monkeyball, which they say sold over 300,000 copies (at $9.99) in its first 20 days. Also of interest is that Jobs has confirmed that Apple has built in a feature that can allow them to remotely kill and remove any app sold through the store on a users iPhone.

Apple Debuts App Store in Advance of iPhone 3G

Apple's App Store has arrived. Apple launched its App Store Thursday which features third-party applications for the iPhone 3G one day in advance of the much anticipated iPhone 3G which goes on sale Friday. The App Store became available this morning when Apple released its 7.7 version of the iTunes software. The App Store will also be available directly from the iPhone 3G's software.

iTunes Store "Unavailable": This iPod Touch Owner is Stuck in Update Limbo

Since I'm a Verizon Wireless customer the closest thing to joining the iFrenzy for the iPhone 3G is taking advantage of Apple's App Store and the wealth new software options available for my iPod Touch. The only problem (sound effect of vinyl record scratching) I can't run any applications from the just opened Apple App Store because I'm locked out. Worse, now that I've updated iTunes to 7.7, I can browse and salivate over applications compatible with my iPod Touch and even download them to my PC. The only problem is my iPod Touch firmware won't update to the latest 2.0 version available today. I've been stuck looking at the message "This version of the iPod software (1.1.4) is the current version."

More than 10 million programs downloaded from iTunes App Store already

More than 10 million programs downloaded from iTunes App Store already Along with their announcement that they've already sold a million iPhones, Apple is making a big deal about the number of programs downloaded from their newly opened iTunes App Store. The App Store offers a variety of programs, most costing less than $10, for the iPhone 3G. There's also a free upgrade to the 2.0 version of the required iPhone 2.0 software for the first generation iPhone, as well as an update for iPod Touch owners that costs $9.95.

Voice Dial iPhone App Gets App Store'd

The previously good Voice Dial jailbreak app for iPhone has made its way onto the App Store, complete with $25 price tag. Voice Dial isn't to be confused with iSpeak, another voice dialing app that will probably hit the App Store sometime.

Best Buy to Sell iPhones: The Symbiosis Grows

Best Buy (BBY) will start selling Apple’s iPhone in its stores and the relationship between the two parties has become quite symbiotic. For Apple (AAPL), Best Buy is a great distribution channel–Apple Stores are typically located in metropolitan areas and consumers may not stumble on an AT&T (T) store. Meanwhile, Apple is just solidifying an existing Mac distribution partnership with Best Buy by adding the iPhone. - The iPhone will be sold at Best Buy Mobile, which has been rolled out to its 970 stores. Best Buy sells Macs at 600 stores.

iPhone App store; why do we need 10 tip calculators?

iPhone App store; why do we need 10 tip calculators? As I posted yesterday, I updated my first generation iPhone to the 2.0 firmware and started trying out 3rd party applications from the App Store. Since there are no trials available I had to pull the trigger on a couple applications I really wanted to try out and bought Super Monkey Ball and SplashMoney so far. Browsing through the iPhone App Store was fun, interesting, and a bit frustrating and I came away with a few impressions.

Apple iTunes App Store scores $30M USD in sales, Super Monkey Ball one of its big hits

The App Store for iTunes launched just ahead of the new iPhone 3G on July 10th to better advertise the device's touchscreen and wireless networking capabilities. Hosting over 1500 applications for free download or purchase at time of writing, it's since proven to be one of the more popular destinations for iPhone owners. According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the App Store has reached 60 million downloads, generating $30 million USD in sales in 30 days. Assuming sales keep pace, App Store downloads could net Apple nearly $360 million USD in yearly revenue:

Apple App Store Developers Furious Over Crafty "Line Jumping" Application Names

A few Apple App Store developers have apparently taken a page from the line cutting Steve Wozniak today, and are using a loop hole in the service's naming conventions to shoot their apps to the top of the list. The story goes that certain developers are cutting to the head of the class with sneakily inserted spaces and quotation marks. One "offender" is Jirbo, Inc., which put a space in front of all of its games’ titles. All Jirbo games now appear at the top of the alphabetical App Store games list.

Apple Launches ITunes App Store With 500+ Apps

L. Miriam writes "Apple launched the iTunes App store for the iPhone and iPod Touch today, following the earlier launch of iTunes 7.7. There are over 500 applications available for download, with prices ranging from free to around $35. Both MySpace and Facebook apps are there, as well as a mix of games, utilities and ebooks. You can download applications now, but you can't do anything with them until the iPhone/iPod 2.0 firmware is released. The App Store can't be accessed directly through iTunes, but Mobile Computer explains how to get to it, and has a few screenshots, too."

NetShare Pulled From iPhone App Store (Again)

We've been wondering how the people behind NetShare get their app approved by Apple for the iPhone App Store. It adds the ability to tether your laptop to your iPhone, using the handset's 3G modem as your laptop's own, meaning you can go pretty much anywhere you can find a decent signal and have full Internet access on your laptop without Wi-Fi, all for free. And then the app was pulled from the store. And then it was back. And now it's gone again. Hopefully you were lucky enough to grab it while it was available, because we're not sure Apple's going to let it out again.

Yes, the iPhone's new App Store is a hit, but . . .

appstore For the new iPhone 3G, it's an accepted fact that the Apple App Store is its killer app. With now over 800 applications, and 200 of them free, it's a veritable geek toy store. Apple announced Monday that more than 10 million apps had been downloaded since the store opened late last week. And a friend speculated that time spent cruising the store's virtual aisles may be why iPhone 3G's battery life is so poor . . .
