A Windows Mobile User Gone BlackBerry (8820)

BlackBerry 9000 will get iTunes sync

Smartphone fans are excited about yesterday's announcement of the Blackberry 9000, aka Blackberry Bold, aka Research In Motion's iPhone killer. But Blackberry users are a different breed than iPhone users--the Blackberry's reason for existence is always-connected e-mail, and Blackberry users tend to be all business, afraid of being out of touch for even a moment. (An old friend in Washington D.C.--where Blackberry users are legion--had to make a vow after her third child was born not to check her e-mail after 6 p.m.)

South Korea opens door, slightly, for BlackBerry

South Korea has opened its restricted telecom market slightly to allow the BlackBerry to go on sale, but only to corporations and not individuals, officials said yesterday. Officials of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the country's Communications Commission said they would no longer apply software rules that mobile phones must use a locally developed wireless software platform known as WIPI to Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry. "The government has decided to apply exemption provisions among the regulations to the BlackBerry, classifying it as a PDA used for business purposes," a ministry official said on condition of anonymity. SK Telecom said it would offer BlackBerry services as early as August. RIM (TSX) fell $1.61 to $139.39. SKM (NYSE) fell 6 cents (U.

Update: RIM-Thomson Reuters To Launch $150 Million Mobile App Fund; BlackBerry Bold Debuts

If Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) can do it, then so can we. Just a few weeks after Apple announced its $100 million iFund dedicated to applications for the iPhone and iPod touch platforms, RIM (NSDQ: RIMM) said today that along with media giant Thomson Reuters (NASDAQ: TRIN) it was planning to launch a $150 million venture capital fund that would invest in mobile applications and services for the BlackBerry platform and other mobile platforms. Canadian VC firms JLA Ventures and RBC Venture Partners will co-manage the fund. Unlike Apple, RIM said its fund would be open to all mobile platforms, not just for the BlackBerry. In a sign that it wanted to break away from its business roots, it also said it would consider both consumer and corporate applications.

A bit more tricklage on RIM's "Apple Killer," the touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder: The official model number is the BlackBerry 9500, and the touchscreen is a bit higher res than the iPhone's (360x480 to 320x480). It'll be running OS 4.7.0 (the Bold runs 4.6). As we inch closer to the September release date expect to hear a lot more, since RIM's ship ain't exactly the tightest one on the seven seas.
