AT T to sell iPhone without contract for 400 more: related news

AT&T to sell $699 iPhone

AT&T to sell $699 iPhone AT&T announced recently that they would be offering another version of the iPhone, one that comes without a contract. That sounds great, on the surface – but just a bit deeper you discover that the no-contract phone has some very severe side effects. Namely, it hurts your wallet – a lot – as the phone runs $400 more than the same model phone with a contract. The $299 version of the iPhone without contract will become $699, a small fortune.

AT&T to sell contract-free iPhone

The telecom titan will sell the new version of Apple's (AAPL) smart phone without a phone-service contract for $599 or $699, depending on the memory options, representing a $400 premium from the standard price with a 2-year contract. The original iPhone was not available without a phone contract. Still, the contract-free phones will be locked to work only on AT&T's (T) network. AT&T will start selling the new phone on July 11. AT&T slid 1.2% to 33.30. Apple jumped 4.3% to 174.68.

The iPhone phenomenon is well and truly in force since the launch of the iPhone 3G in Australia last month. With this in mind, competitors are clamouring for a piece of the pie and are set to begin launching potential 'iPhone killers' in a bid to derail the Apple machine. We’ve been fortunate to have two of the newest iPhone competitors in the office, along with the iPhone 3G. RIM’s BlackBerry Bold and the much anticipated HTC Touch Diamond are two smartphones that are set to compete with the iPhone 3G in Australia and around the globe. Apple explains iPhone 3G upgrade process

Apple this week began posting information for iPhone users intending to update their device to the new iPhone 3G. A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. The instructions indicate that iPhone users in the US will not need to transfer their SIM card (a new one will be provided with the iPhone 3G) and describes how to transfer settings, personal info, SMS messages, and other data to the new device using iTunes' backup iPhone feature.

iPhone better than Nintendo DS and PSP combined

If id Software co-founder Carmack can be believed, iPhone might emerge as a major force in the mobile gaming industry and trounce many rivals. He expressed regret that his company still has not released any games for the iPhone. According to him, iPhone with it’s great graphics and a large screen can support advanced games which other portable devices can’t. He said id Software is already developing two games for iPhone, a normal mobile game and the other, an advanced game that would test iPhone’s graphic abilities. Though graphics may let down iPhone, he feels it is more powerful that Nintendo and PSP combined. Though iPhone may not be the definitive answer to mobile gaming, it sure is a great device, at least for now.

AT&T's Odd iPhone Offer

Some of the details surrounding AT&T's iPhone prices make little sense, writes Eric Benderoff. The company will sell a 3G iPhone with no contract for a $400 premium. Unlocked phones aren't uncommon, but that $599 iPhone will only be unlocked from a contract, not from the carrier -- it'll still have to use AT&T. Why not just buy the $199 version and pay the $175 early contract termination fee?

Almighty PwnageTool 2.0 arrives, down goes new 3G OS for iPhone

Promises and promises and few more promises, that’s what came from Apple’s stable about iPhone 3G software being unhackable, but iPhone Dev Team has done it again as they released PwnageTool 2.0 for iPhone 3G, 1st Gen iPhone and iPod Touch. Sadly, PwnageTool 2.0 is only able to break all shackles on 1st Generation iPhones and not on iPhone 3G. That means, you won’t be able to unlock your iPhone 3G as of now, though you can unlock your 1st Gen iPhone.

Telkom Kenya to start selling iPhone

Telkom Kenya will start selling the iPhone in Kenya next month after launching its mobile phone service under the Orange brand. The company's chief commercial and marketing officer Njeri Rionge told a local news service that Orange entered into a contract with Apple that gave it the right to sell the iPhone in Kenya and the sale will commence once the mobile service rolls out. However, Rionge said Telkom Kenya has yet to decide whether to offer the iPhone 3G, the older version or both. Apple launched the iPhone in 21 countries on 11 July and in France on 17 July. The remaining 50 countries include 17 in South America, 14 in Africa, 12 in Europe, four in Asia and three in the Middle East. Telkom Kenya CEO Dominique Saint-Jean confirmed that the Orange firm has entered into the agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in Kenya but could not

The Real Price Of The iPhone: $599

As was widely expected, it turns out that all the hype and fuss about the iPhone costing $199 was really hiding the key facts: it's only that price if you're buying it in the US, along with a long term contract with high service fees. At first it actually appeared as though the only possible way you could buy the phone was with one of those contracts. However, AT&T has now admitted that it will indeed sell the phone without a contract, but the price will be $599. While some unlockers may find that worthwhile, it's probably a bit much for most. Still, this once again highlights how Apple's predictions that it was going to change the economics of the mobile phone industry haven't actually been true. There are plenty of mobile phones out there that you can buy subsidized under a contract, which cost 3x as much without a contract.
