AT&T's Wi-Fi for Apple iPhone coming sooner or later

Regarding AT&T and its free Wi-Fi for iPhone users, Saul Hansell reports for The New York Times, "I was able to reach Fletcher Cook, an AT&T spokesman... The posting of the offer of free Wi-Fi on the company’s site was 'a human error,' he said. But he added that the company has long planned to offer free Wi-Fi to customers with iPhones and other phones that have Wi-Fi capability."

Apple explains iPhone 3G upgrade process

Apple this week began posting information for iPhone users intending to update their device to the new iPhone 3G. A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. The instructions indicate that iPhone users in the US will not need to transfer their SIM card (a new one will be provided with the iPhone 3G) and describes how to transfer settings, personal info, SMS messages, and other data to the new device using iTunes' backup iPhone feature.

AT&T -- Sorry about the mix up: AT&T has finally come clean about their Wi-Fi hotspot shenanigans. Turns out, turning on Wi-Fi and posting the information on their site was human error. Official: Free AT&T Wi-Fi For iPhone Users

The busy iPhone-user-about-town will be able to access AT&T hotspots around the country – all 17,000 of 'em, including those in Starbucks (which hardly counts as free as you have to buy a cup of gravel stewed in water).

WiFi for iPhone: AT&T giveth, then taketh, then giveth again

Last week, iPhone users noticed that AT&T WiFi hotspots in some Starbucks locations allowed free access after asking for their 10-digit cell number. Then on Monday this week, however, users reported the free access had been shut off. Today, that changed again, as AT&T's website officially states that all iPhone rate plans now include "access to AT&T's more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots" across the US.
