Apple On iPhone Plan Pricing What s So Complicated: related news

Apple On iPhone Plan Pricing: What's So Complicated?

So Apple called today, a little annoyed with my portrayal yesterday of AT&T’s iPhone pricing. The main difference on plans for the new iPhone versus the old are simple: The data plan is $10 more a month, mainly because the faster connection will mean higher data usage; And text messaging is charged separately.

In pictures: iPhone 3G vs BlackBerry Bold vs Touch Diamond

The iPhone phenomenon is well and truly in force since the launch of the iPhone 3G in Australia last month. With this in mind, competitors are clamouring for a piece of the pie and are set to begin launching potential 'iPhone killers' in a bid to derail the Apple machine. We’ve been fortunate to have two of the newest iPhone competitors in the office, along with the iPhone 3G. RIM’s BlackBerry Bold and the much anticipated HTC Touch Diamond are two smartphones that are set to compete with the iPhone 3G in Australia and around the globe. Check out our slideshow of these hot smartphones side by side! iPhone 3G vs BlackBerry Bold vs Touch Diamond iPhone 3G vs BlackBerry Bold vs Touch Diamond iPhone 3G vs BlackBerry Bold vs Touch Diamond iPhone 3G vs BlackBerry Bold vs Touch Diamond iPhone 3G vs BlackBerry Bold vs Touch Diamond iPhone 3G vs B

Apple explains iPhone 3G upgrade process

Apple this week began posting information for iPhone users intending to update their device to the new iPhone 3G. A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. The instructions indicate that iPhone users in the US will not need to transfer their SIM card (a new one will be provided with the iPhone 3G) and describes how to transfer settings, personal info, SMS messages, and other data to the new device using iTunes' backup iPhone feature.

Apple offers iPhone 2.0.2 update via iTunes

Apple on Monday released iPhone 2.0.2, an update to its second-generation software for the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. The update is about 242MB and first appeared via iTunes just after 5PM EST. As is usually the case with iPhone updates, Apple provided few details, saying simply that the update contains "bug fixes," and links to existing online iPhone support resources. Over the weekend the company seeded iPhone v2.1b4, a private beta, to developers, but removed the much anticipated 'push" feature that would allow applications to respond to internet triggers (new email, an IM, etc.) without being open. The major software update along with the unique "push service" was announced in June 2008 at Apple's WWDC and was expected to launch in September, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Apple Not Selling iPhones in Canadian Apple Stores on Launch Day

Apple's apparently so fed up with the high pricing that Rogers is shoving into Canadian iPhone owners' faces that there will be no iPhone 3Gs sold at Apple Stores in Canada this Friday. This follows up Apple's previous action of diverting stock from Canada to Europe, and really sets the tone that they're unhappy with Rogers' $60 for 150 minutes, 75 SMS messages and 400MB data plan. So what's the deal? Canadians who still want one will have to line up early to get one of the 10-20 units per store that Rogers is getting. If we were you, we'd stay home and wait for Rogers to admit defeat, stop slapping its customers in the face and lower its prices. [Apple Insider]

Apple iPhone 3G Review

(Review) - We’ll get right to the chase. Apple’s iPhone 3G is very similar to the original iPhone. In fact, first-generation iPhones can be updated to use the iPhone 2.0 software, which will give a lot of the software capabilities of iPhone 3G to its predecessor. However, that doesn’t mean that iPhone 3G isn’t worth the upgrade. If you were holding out on the original iPhone in hopes of iPhone 3G, this is your chance to grab one, assuming can get past the strict requirements of activating the phone in AT&T or Apple Stores. That’s of course to prevent a lot of folks from unlocking their iPhones.

Hackers Post Software to Jailbreak Apple's iPhone 3G

The iPhone Dev Team has posted its PwnageTool 2.0.1 software to jailbreak Apple, Inc.'s latest iPhone operating system 2.0. An unreleased exploit in the iPhone OS was used to allow non-Apple applications to run on Apple's iPhone and iPhone 3G. Contrary to early reports, the hack does not unlock the iPhone 3G to use carriers other than AT&T.

Rogers, Apple see big sales of iPhone

Rogers Wireless Communications Inc. sold out of its initial iPhone stock in a handful of Canadian cities over the weekend after it began selling Apple Inc.'s popular touch screen cellphone on Friday. Rogers declined to prove specific sales figures, however Apple said that more than one million iPhones were sold around the globe during the first three days of sales in 21 countries. "IPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," Apple chief executive officer Steve Jobs said in a statement. Apple also announced that more than 10 million applications were downloaded through the company's new App Store, which sells programs and games designed to work on the next-generation iPhone. Neither Rogers nor Apple addressed the crippling server outages which plagued iPhone activations in both the U.

iPhone review

Apple24 carat Gold Apple iPhone review by LetsGoMobile : The large amount of patents Apple applied for on behalf of the iPhone makes you expect that this should lead to an exclusive device. However; Continental Mobiles are not satisfied with the exclusivity of the Apple iPhone, and that's why they have their own version of the much-discussed iPhone; a special 24 carat gold iPhone. Even though the Apple iPhone in itself is already a unique device, the combination with the additions of Continental Mobiles ensures that you, as a user, are guaranteed not to meet a similar device. LetsGoMobile have reviewed this unique mobile phone.

Pricing for iPhone 3G Reflects a New Value Proposition

Apple, Inc.'s new iPhone 3G will indeed cost $199 for the 8GB version and $299 for the 16GB version, but only for certain AT&T customers. Other AT&T buyers will pay more for Apple's iPhone 3G -- and buyers without an AT&T plan will pay a lot more for the iPhone 3G. An analyst says the value proposition has changed for Apple's iPhone 3G.

Apple (AAPL) 'No Comment' on iPhone 3G Issues

It looks a like a week's worth of bad press has finally worn down Apple (AAPL: sentiment, chart, options) bulls, as the shares are poised to close today with a loss of nearly 2%. Meanwhile, the media's full-court press isn't letting up. In the latest report to seek answers in regard to the company's response to growing concerns about the iPhone 3G's connection issues, all ABC News was able to get from Apple was "No comment." What's more, the issues are starting to take a toll on die-hard Apple fans, with ABC quoting one loyal user as saying, "I am a true Apple fan, so this is nothing to make Apple look bad. ... I think Apple should come out and tell people what's going on with these phones."

Rumour: Apple to get charitable with RED iPhone?

red-iphone-3g.jpgMuch of the gossip in the queues for iPhone 3G on launch day here in the UK was over whether people wanted a black or a white model, before we all found out that we’d only have a choice of black. Who knows when the white version will touch down (if at all) in the UK. Still, if you don’t lead a monochrome lifestyle, you’ll be pleased by the strong rumours that Apple is planning to launch a red iPhone for Christmas. Or rather a RED iPhone, as it’ll apparently be part of the charitable (PRODUCT) RED campaign, which Apple has supported in the past with scarlet iPods. It’s a good cause, but does anyone really want a red iPhone? That said, if Apple ever launches a green one that benefits eco charities, I might be tempted to switch to it…

iTunes Achilles' Heel In iPhone 3G Launch

Apple fans, old and new, got to experience the good side and the dark side of Apple's product launch mania during Friday's iPhone 3G release. Lines were long, though some said not as long as for the original iPhone, but the big news was all the iPhone activation problems. Apple's decision to brick iPhones until they were activated at AT&T stores, or via users' iTunes software, showed the real weak link in Apple's launch strategy of bring out the iPhone 2.0 software and iPhone 3G devices out on the same day.Â

Telstra joins line-up for iPhone day

Telstra has announced that it will offer Apple's new third-generation iPhone by 11 July 2008. This means that Telstra is not going to be outdone by Vodafone and Optus, which also plan to offer the iPhone in Australia. Telstra has unveiled its pricing plans for the iPhone. The iPhone incorporates Apple's digital musical player, the iPod, with an internet-enabled mobile telephone. These are expected to be very popular in Australia. Hutchison Telecommunications, which owns the "3" mobile telephone network, will be the only carrier not able to sell the new iPhone on 11 July

Psystar Will Countersue Apple

An anonymous reader sends us to CNet for news that Apple clone maker Pystar plans to countersue Apple. We discussed Apple's suit last month. "Mac clone maker Psystar plans to file its answer to Apple's copyright infringement lawsuit Tuesday as well as a countersuit of its own, alleging that Apple engages in anticompetitive business practices. Miami-based Psystar... will sue Apple under two federal laws designed to discourage monopolies and cartels, the Sherman Antitrust Act and the Clayton Antitrust Act, saying Apple's tying of the Mac OS to Apple-labeled hardware is 'an anticompetitive restraint of trade,' according to [an] attorney... Psystar is requesting that the court find Apple's EULA void, and is asking for unspecified damages."

Big Three in Talks as Apple Confirms Russian iPhone Launch for 2009

Apple has confirmed that the iPhone will become officially available in Russia in 2009, reports Prime-Tass, citing Yevgeny Butman, the chief executive of Apple's official distributor in Russia, Apple IMC, in Vedomosti. It has also been preliminarily reported that the 8 gigabyte version of the 3G iPhone, which currently retails for around US$299 in the United States, could cost up to around US$2,000 in Russia, although no official details have yet been confirmed. Each of Russia's three largest mobile operators—Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), VimpelCom and MegaFon—are in talks with Apple about selling the iPhone next year. The model has already unofficially debuted in the Russian market, with around 470,000 having been privately imported and unlocked to work on any mobile network.

Inside Apple's iPhone SDK Gag Order

snydeq writes "InfoWorld's Tom Yager takes a closer look at Apple's iPhone SDK confidentiality agreement, which restricts developers from discussing the SDK or exchanging ideas with others, thereby leaving no room for forums, newsgroups, open source projects, tutorials, magazine articles, users' groups, or books. But because anyone is free to obtain the iPhone SDK by signing up for it, Apple is essentially branding publicly available information as confidential. This 'puzzling contradiction' is the 'antithesis of the developer-friendly Apple Developer Connection' on which the iPhone SDK program is based, Yager contends. 'You'll see arguments from armchair legal analysts that the iPhone developer Agreements won't stand up in court — but those analysts certainly won't stand up in court on your behalf.
