Apple this week began posting information for iPhone users intending to update their device to the new iPhone 3G. A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. The instructions indicate that iPhone users in the US will not need to transfer their SIM card (a new one will be provided with the iPhone 3G) and describes how to transfer settings, personal info, SMS messages, and other data to the new device using iTunes' backup iPhone feature.

We’ve all been hearing a million different things about this “new” iPhone that is suppose to be coming out any day now! I recently spoke to one of my friends who works at AT&T and I guess the new gossip going around is that the new iPhone is going to be cheaper than the original. I don’t know about you guys, but I find this hard to believe. The 3G is suppose to be faster, have GPS, a new glossy black cover (that is said to be color changeable), slightly thicker, updated software and the camera is expected to be better. I’m sure there will be a ton more things that will be changed or newly added to the new iPhone, so it’s a little strange that Apple would make the new iPhone less expensive...Especially, because people are going to buy it no matter how much it is.

An Apple 3G iPhone war has broken out between the world's fastest 3G network run by Telstra and Optus who this week won a deal to sell the new Apple iPhone. At the core of the argument is the fact that consumers who buy the new 3G iPhone will not get the "best of" the new 3G iPhone on the Optus network that according to Telstra runs at up to half the speed of the Telstra network.

Keep the iPhone you already have - here's why. I had an interesting "iPhone 3G debate" over drinks this evening with a passionate, but less than thrilled, iPhone user. I'll call him "Don". Don, like every other iPhone owner, was debating whether or not to upgrade to the new iPhone 3G or stick with the iPhone he already had. Don's verdict? Keep the current iPhone. The reason? Freedom of choice of cell phone carriers, and iPhone 2.0 software works fine on his existing iPhone.

Apple has been known for clearing out its inventory of a certain product ahead of a major upgrade. Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris declined to comment on reasons for the shortage and on Apple's plans for an update to the device, which is widely expected to be unveiled in June at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The US Patent Office has approved an Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) patent for what looks like an instant messenger application for the iPhone, with some improvements over its SMS feature, such as a word predicter which suggests more words. This appears to be a different than the one reported in April. That’s all well and good—a native IM application is something that a lot of people began clamouring for once the iPhone was released, and it would be a nice feature to introduce with the next version of the iPhone. Apple Insider has some good details on the patent—and it’s important to remember that it’s just a patent and a lot of patents don’t lead to applications. With Apple opening the iPhone to third parties it’s a sure bet that the current big IM companies will be putting their chat programs on the iPhone, so any new service would ha

Apple's iPhone is set to make a big splash in India. A new report says that the rollout of the iPhone in India is set to be the largest, anywhere in the world -- through both Vodaphone (previously announced) and Airtel mobile carriers. Citing industry sources, Riyaz.net says that Apple's iPhones will be sold through about 250,000 Vodafone and Airtel retail outlets including franchisee-owned shops. "This rollout would be mammoth when compared to iPhones being available only in about 7,000 AT&T outlets in the US apart from the Apple Stores," the report noted. With the launch of the new 3G iPhone expected next month (likely at WWDC), Apple is already expanding the number of countries in which the iPhone will be available, including Australia (in an non-exclusive arrangement) as well as Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, A
