NVIDIA licenses low-power tech from Transmeta

While NVIDIA has made strides in power management, their chipsets are still known for being power hungry, especially when compared against the competition. To address the issue NVIDIA has licensed low-power technology from former CPU manufacturer Transmeta. According to Transmeta, "The agreement grants to NVIDIA a non-exclusive and fully paid-up license to all of Transmeta's patents and patent applications, and a non-exclusive license and transfer of certain Transmeta advanced power management and other computing technologies."

Are SSD Really More Power Efficient?

Bakasama writes "Tom's Hardware compared the power performance of several available SSD cards with a Rotating HDD that was chosen specifically for its poor power efficiency. The results seem to fly in the face of current wisdom. 'Flash-based solid state drives (SSDs) are considered to be the future of performance hard drives, and everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon. We are no exception, as we have been publishing many articles on flash-based SSDs during the last few months, emphasizing the performance gains and the potential power savings brought by flash memory. And there is nothing wrong with this, since SLC flash SSDs easily outperform conventional hard drives today (SLC = single level cell). However, we have discovered that the power savings aren't there: in fact, battery runtimes actually decrease if you use a flash SSD.

Fujitsu: 256Mbit FCRAM for digital consumer electronics

Fujitsu announces the development of a 256Mbit Consumer FCRAM for digital consumer electronics, the MB81EDS256545. The new FCRAM has low power consumption and is suited for system-in-package designs, with samples available from today. Key features include a 64-bit I/O, a low power DDR SDRAM interface that enables data transfer capabilities equivalent to two DDR2 SDRAMs with 16-bit I/O while reducing power consumption by up to 1W. This contributes to power savings for digital consumer electronics and makes the new device ideal for consumer electronics products that require low power consumption, such as digital televisions and camcorders.

Making power policy just work

The kernel can't know if you want those low-priority processes to use all the CPU power on the system, or if you want them to pile up on one CPU and save power on the rest. Developers debate the best way to set the system's power rules.

More Power for a Drenched iPhone

The latest hoopla about the 3G iPhone ends abruptly when you certainly start talking about its battery-life. 3 hours of surfing on the phone would leave it conked regardless of your need thus it becomes very important for every iPhone 2G/3G user to buy a power station as soon as he realises that the surfing needs aren’t being met with. Brando from Hong Kong has come up with a Power Station for the iPhone that would supply 1000mAh power and all that at $25 isn’t a bad buy especially for emergency situations. People do talk about its looks but then I believe that is not the aspect which would make it sell initially, it is the need folks.

Switching To Solar Power - One Month Later

ThinSkin writes "After an interesting article on solar panel installation for the home, Loyd Case at ExtremeTech has written a follow-up after about a month of normal use. Posting an $11.34 electric bill (roughly 3% of previous months), Loyd shares his experiences using solar power and how it can be fun for the geek, with computer monitoring services and power generation data. Of course, solar power isn't all fun and games, given the amount of required maintenance - even unpredictable maintenance like wiping off accumulated ash from fires in Northern California."

Fujitsu vows faster, low-power RAM for handhelds...

Fujitsu on Tuesday unveiled a new version of its Fast Cycle RAM (FCRAM that it believes should give the performance of conventional memory with the power of mobile memory. By using a 64-bit wide interface, the chipmaker can produce memory which is faster than two typical 16-bit DDR2 memory sticks while also dropping the resistors that consume much of the power; a 256-megabit (32MB) edition of the new FCRAM chip uses about 70 percent less power, or one watt less, than ordinary RAM.

Texas To Build $4.93B Wind-Power Project

Hugh Pickens points out a story in the NYTimes about Texas' $4.93 billion wind-power transmission project. One of the major goals of the project is to improve electrical throughput to the population centers. Current transmission lines are unable to handle all of the power generated by Texas' wind fields. State citizens will be paying slightly more to help cover the cost, though the project is expected to eventually lower the cost to consumers. Quoting: "The lines can handle 18,500 megawatts of power, enough for 3.7 million homes on a hot day when air-conditioners are running. 'The project will ease a bottleneck that has become a major obstacle to development of the wind-rich Texas Panhandle and other areas suitable for wind generation. The lack of transmission has been a fundamental issue in Texas, and it's becoming more and more of an is

Red Hat Linux trumps Microsoft Windows in power test

Raleigh, N.C.-based Red Hat Inc. has touted its "green computing" image following a recent independent test that ranked Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5's power efficiency over Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise and Microsoft Windows Server 2008 on three different hardware platforms. The server tests rated power consumption on IBM, Dell and HP machines in three conditions: active mode optimized for power savings, active mode optimized for performance and quiet mode.

Santorini Volcano, Greece

One of the largest volcanic eruptions in the past 10,000 years occurred in approximately 1620 BC on the volcanic island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea. This astronaut photograph illustrates the center of Santorini Volcano, located approximately 118 kilometers to the north of Crete (not shown). Prior to 1620 BC, the island of Santorini, now known as Thera, was built up by layers of lava created by overlapping shield volcanoes, and it had experienced three significant eruptions that formed overlapping calderas, or collapsed magma chambers. Around 1620 BC, the fourth (and latest) major eruption created the present-day islands and caldera bay of Santorini Volcano. The caldera rim is clearly visible in this image as a steep cliff forming the western shoreline of the island of Thera.
