Volcanic eruption signals simulated in lab for first time: related news

Volcanic eruption signals simulated in lab for first time

(PhysOrg.com) -- For the first time, seismic signals that precede a volcanic eruption have been simulated and visualized in 3-D under controlled pressure conditions in a laboratory. The ability to conduct such simulations will better equip municipal authorities in volcanic hot spots around the world in knowing when to alert people who live near volcanoes of an impending eruption.

Researchers describe for first time how some bacteria kill males: They first invade the mother

Many groups of bacteria are known as "male killers" - they target and kill just the males of a host species. Now, a Cornell scientist has helped describe for the first time just how certain male-killing bacteria manage to specifically kill off males of a parasitic wasp. The bacteria Arsenophonus nasoniae infect both sexes of the parasitic wasp Nasonia vitripennis but target the males, killing more than 70 percent, said Patrick Ferree, Cornell postdoctoral fellow in molecular biology and genetics. Ferree and his University of Rochester collaborator John Werren report on this mechanism in Current Biology.

Illumina's human genome sequencing studies published in Nature

Illumina announced that the November 6, 2008 issue of Nature published sequencing results of the first Yoruban human genome. The study was completed by Illumina scientists and collaborators at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and generated greater than 30x average coverage of the genome. Four million single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including one million novel SNPs, and 400,000 structural variants were identified. The Yoruban study and two other papers--by researchers at Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) and Washington University--featured in the same November 6 issue of Nature all used the Illumina Genome Analyzer to complete the sequencing studies. This marks the first time that three human genome studies--including the first Asian individual, the first cancer patient, and the first African male--have been simultaneously publis

First Whole Cancer Genome Sequenced

dooling writes "A paper detailing the sequencing of the first human cancer genome will be published in the 6 November 2008 issue of Nature. This is not only the first cancer genome published, it is the first female genome as well. You can read the paper's abstract, DNA sequencing of a cytogenetically normal acute myeloid leukaemia genome, or the story in Science News. This issue of Nature also has articles on the sequencing of the first African and Asian genomes. The sequencing in all three articles was done using the Illumina Genome Analyzer, one of the massively parallel, next-generation genome sequencing platforms."

Microsoft Exploit Predictions Right 40% of Time

CWmike writes "Microsoft today called its first month of predicting whether hackers will create exploit code for its bugs a success — even though the company got its forecast right just 40% of the time for October. 'I think we did really well,' said Mike Reavey, group manager at the Microsoft Security Research Center (MSRC), when asked for a postmortem evaluation of the first cycle of the team's Exploitability Index. 'Four of the [nine] issues that we said where consistent exploit code was likely did have exploit code appear over the first two weeks. And another key was that in no case did we rate something too low.' Microsoft's Exploitability Index was introduced last month."

Measuring Web application response time: Meet the client

Plenty of Web applications rely on JavaScript or some other client-side scripting, yet most developers only measure server-side execution time. Client-side execution time is just as important. In fact, if you're measuring from the end-user perspective, you should also be looking at network time. In this article Srijeeb Roy introduces a lightweight approach to capturing the end user's experience of application response time. He also shows you how to send and log client-side response times on a server for future analysis. Level: Intermediate
