Transformer Glitch Halts LHC Operations: related news

Transformer Glitch Halts LHC Operations

Debris from particles hitting the collimator blocks were detected in the calorimeters and muon chambers (CERN/LHC/CMS)

Second Snag This Week Could Delay LHC for Weeks

sciencehabit writes "After a transformer failure earlier this week, the Large Hadron Collider has hit another snag — and this one is much more serious. As Science reports, 'At least one of the LHC's more than 1700 superconducting magnets failed, springing a leak and spewing helium gas into the subterranean tunnel that houses the collider ... How long [repairs take] will depend in part on how much of the LHC must be warmed to room temperature for servicing. If it's only a short section, the repair could be relatively quick. But the machine is built in octants, and if workers have to heat and cool an entire octant, then the cooling alone would take several weeks." Reader Simmeh contributes coverage from the BBC. We recently discussed the transformer malfunction at the LHC, which was a smaller problem and has already been fixed.

LHC Shut Down By Transformer Malfunction

Ortega-Starfire writes "A 30-ton transformer in the Large Hadron Collider malfunctioned, requiring complete replacement on the day the LHC came online. No one at CERN reported any problems, and they only released this data once the Associated Press sent people to investigate rumors of problems. I guess its hard to just sweep a 30-ton transformer breaking under the rug."

LHC computing Grid launched

03 October 2008 The LHC Grid is ready to tackle mankind's biggest data challenge from the earth's most powerful accelerator. Three weeks after the first particle beams were injected into the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid combines the power of more than 140 computer centres from 33 countries to analyse and manage more than 15 Pbyte of LHC data every year.

Panic grips LHC after bomb hoax

LAHORE: Panic gripped litigants and lawyers present at the Lahore High Court (LHC) when the bomb disposal squad (BDS) started searching for explosives on Thursday afternoon. The BDS arrived at the court after the police emergency help line received a telephone call about the presence of a bomb in the LHC, the Anarkali Police Station house officer (SHO) said, adding that the LHC security staff and the BDS had been informed about the call. However, no explosive material was found during the two-hour search operation. The SHO said that the police were trying to trace the unidentified caller who had made the hoax call through telephone number 0345-7082042. However, he added, the number had been switched off. Security personnel deployed at the LHC became more vigilant after the hoax call.

CERN Launches Huge LHC Computing Grid

RaaVi writes "Yesterday CERN launched the largest computing grid in the world, which is destined to analyze the data coming from world's biggest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider. The computing grid consists of more than 140 computer centers from around the world working together to handle the expected 10-15 petabytes of data the LHC will generate each year." The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid will initially handle data for up to 7,000 scientists around the world. Though the LHC itself is down for some lengthy repairs, an event called GridFest was held yesterday to commemorate the occasion. The LCG will run alongside the LHC@Home volunteer project.

LHC CJ takes notice of lockdown

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice (CJ) Sayed Zahid Hussain has taken strict notice of the locking up of courts in Lahore, Okara and Toba Tek Singh districts and has directed the advocate general (AG) to approach the chief secretary and other officials to take action against those responsible. While presiding over a meeting of the LHC administrative committee, the CJ ordered the AG to ask for explanations from the officials regarding their failure to stop bar members from locking courts when they had already been informed by the LHC registrar about the situation. The CJ also directed all sessions judges concerned to submit reports to the registrar, and directed the media to provide recordings of the incidents to the registrar. staff report

LHC allows NEPRA to issue fresh electricity tariffs

LAHORE: Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday allowed the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to issue notifications of fresh electricity tariffs, but barred it from implementing the same to the extent of over a 100 textile mills and industrial units which have moved the LHC. The judge adjourned the hearing until November 11. The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association counsel Syed Ali Zafar told the court that tariff determination was an open procedure and an opportunity of a hearing must be provided to all stakeholders. The LHC had already restrained NEPRA and other electricity distribution companies from implementing variable tariffs on industrial units.Zafar said that after the tariff was increased, electric distribution companies filed a review petition before NEPRA to further increase i

Supermicro Participates in CERN LHC Project Inauguration

CERN openlab boosts the performance of LHC computing

06 October 2008 The LHC Grid Fest, held October 3, 2008 at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, and at several sites around the world, commemorated the readiness of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG). At full capacity, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest particle accelerator, is expected to produce more than 15 million Gigabytes of data each year. Hundreds of millions of subatomic particles will collide each second, presenting a massive data challenge. The mission of the WLCG is to build and maintain the data storage and analysis infrastructure for this immense flow of data, thus helping physicists open new frontiers in our understanding of the Universe.

Helium Leak Forces LHC Shutdown for at Least Two Months

It's this sort of news I really did not want to wake up to. At 0927 GMT Friday morning, a fault known as a "quench" resulted in the leakage of a tonne of helium coolant causing 100 of the LHC superconducting magnets to heat up to 100°C. The fire services had to be called and it was some time before engineers could access the tunnels to assess the damage. It was worse than they were expecting. Although no one was hurt and there was no danger to the public, the once-supercooled magnets were hot enough to boil water and optimal vacuum conditions had been lost. To perform repairs, the rest of the damaged sector will need to be warmed up and then slowly cooled down again, resulting in a shutdown of LHC operations for at least two months…
