Researchers discover new genes for IBD in Children

Singapore, Sept 2, 2008: Researchers have discovered two new genes that increase the risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in childhood. While further study is needed to identify the specific disease-causing mutations in these new genes, the researchers say the genes are particularly strong candidates to be added to the list of genes already known to affect IBD.

Scientists identify new genetic risk factors for Crohn's disease

WASHINGTON (Xinhua): An international consortium of Crohn's disease researchers has combined data from three independent studies to identify 21 new genetic variants associated with the inflammatory bowel disorder, bringing the total number of risk factors to 32, according to a report available here on Monday.

A new study in the Aug. 31 online edition of Nature Genetics looked at DNA samples from 1,000 people who had childhood-onset IBD. To search for gene variations related to IBD, the researchers compared these DNA samples to those from 4,250 healthy people.

Electronic Arts signs deal with id

Electronic Arts announced Monday that it will publish a new title from id Software, one of the leading independent game developers. EA and id showed a short video of the game at an EA press event at the E3 games conference in Los Angeles. Dubbed "Rage," the game involves "action, exploration and driving," said id co-owner John Carmack. He did not say when the game would be released but said id would reveal more details at it's QuakeCon event in Dallas later this month. The deal is something of a coup for EA. Id, which invented the first-person shooter genre in 1991 with its "Wolfenstein 3D" game, has had a longstanding relationship with EA-rival Activision. Activision published id's most recent versions of its popular "Doom" and "Quake" franchises.
