LAHORE: Panic gripped litigants and lawyers present at the Lahore High Court (LHC) when the bomb disposal squad (BDS) started searching for explosives on Thursday afternoon. The BDS arrived at the court after the police emergency help line received a telephone call about the presence of a bomb in the LHC, the Anarkali Police Station house officer (SHO) said, adding that the LHC security staff and the BDS had been informed about the call. However, no explosive material was found during the two-hour search operation. The SHO said that the police were trying to trace the unidentified caller who had made the hoax call through telephone number 0345-7082042. However, he added, the number had been switched off. Security personnel deployed at the LHC became more vigilant after the hoax call.

RaaVi writes "Yesterday CERN launched the largest computing grid in the world, which is destined to analyze the data coming from world's biggest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider. The computing grid consists of more than 140 computer centers from around the world working together to handle the expected 10-15 petabytes of data the LHC will generate each year." The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid will initially handle data for up to 7,000 scientists around the world. Though the LHC itself is down for some lengthy repairs, an event called GridFest was held yesterday to commemorate the occasion. The LCG will run alongside the LHC@Home volunteer project.

LAHORE: Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday allowed the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to issue notifications of fresh electricity tariffs, but barred it from implementing the same to the extent of over a 100 textile mills and industrial units which have moved the LHC. The judge adjourned the hearing until November 11. The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association counsel Syed Ali Zafar told the court that tariff determination was an open procedure and an opportunity of a hearing must be provided to all stakeholders. The LHC had already restrained NEPRA and other electricity distribution companies from implementing variable tariffs on industrial units.Zafar said that after the tariff was increased, electric distribution companies filed a review petition before NEPRA to further increase i

rufey writes "The recent problems at the Large Hadron Collider will now keep it idle until spring 2009. The official press release is here. The LHC went offline due to a suspected failure in a superconducting connection, which overheated and caused around 100 of the LHC's super-cooled magnets to heat up by as much as 100 degrees. This resulted in the accidental release of a ton of liquid helium. The process required to repair the failed superconducting connection involves weeks of warming up the affected area from -456 degrees Fahrenheit to room temperature, and then several more weeks to cool it back down after the repair is made. The total amount of time to do this will spill over into CERN's scheduled winter maintenance/shutdown period, which is partly done to save money on electricity during the period of peak demand.

The Large Hadron Collider, the world's most complicated machine that was felled by a single faulty solder joint last month, won't be back until summer 2009 now, at the earliest—a few months later than CERN last speculated. And at what cost? $21 million in repairs. A drop in the bucket when the full $10 billion budget is considered, yes, but let's hope some of this dough is spent on a bit more magnet-meltdown-preventing solder redundancy. [AP]

06 October 2008 The LHC Grid Fest, held October 3, 2008 at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, and at several sites around the world, commemorated the readiness of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG). At full capacity, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest particle accelerator, is expected to produce more than 15 million Gigabytes of data each year. Hundreds of millions of subatomic particles will collide each second, presenting a massive data challenge. The mission of the WLCG is to build and maintain the data storage and analysis infrastructure for this immense flow of data, thus helping physicists open new frontiers in our understanding of the Universe.

sciencehabit writes "After a transformer failure earlier this week, the Large Hadron Collider has hit another snag — and this one is much more serious. As Science reports, 'At least one of the LHC's more than 1700 superconducting magnets failed, springing a leak and spewing helium gas into the subterranean tunnel that houses the collider ... How long [repairs take] will depend in part on how much of the LHC must be warmed to room temperature for servicing. If it's only a short section, the repair could be relatively quick. But the machine is built in octants, and if workers have to heat and cool an entire octant, then the cooling alone would take several weeks." Reader Simmeh contributes coverage from the BBC. We recently discussed the transformer malfunction at the LHC, which was a smaller problem and has already been fixed.

Summary: On Lou Dobbs Tonight, Roger Hedgecock claimed that the Department of Housing and Urban Development "was talking about 5 million illegal alien home mortgage loans that have gone bad." But Hedgecock did not cite a source for the purported HUD statistic. In fact, an article published more than an hour before Lou Dobbs Tonight aired reported that HUD "says there is no basis to news reports that more than 5 million bad mortgages are held by illegal immigrants" and that "a HUD spokesman said his agency has no data showing the number of illegal immigrants holding foreclosed or bad mortgages."
