Turns Out People Say They're Concerned About Privacy, But They're Not

Well, this shouldn't surprise very many people, but following on plenty of earlier studies that have made it clear that most people don't do much to protect their privacy, a new study out of the UK pretty much states the obvious: people say they're concerned about privacy, but they sure don't act that way. The study found 84% of users say they carefully guard their info online -- but when tested, 89% of people actually did give away info in the same exact survey. To be fair, the specific set of questions was first asking people if they carefully guard their income info, followed later by a question asking them what income bracket they fell into. It's reasonable to think that some folks believe that the bracket is not the same as giving away their actual income -- which is what the first question implied.

Researchers Discover The Gene That Can Cause Suicide

Researchers Discover The Gene That Can Cause SuicideThe Researchers that discovered a connection of some specific genes with suicide, affirmed that this research can help in development of effective treatments for many mental disorders. The group of researchers led by Michael Poulter of the Robarts Research Institute at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ont. and Hymie Anisman of Carleton's Neuroscience Research Institute at Carleton University in Ottawa, compared the brains of people who committed suicide with the brain of people who died from heart attacks or natural causes. Researchers discovered the proteins that can chemically modify DNA directly. The study showed the presence of high quantity of a particular protein in the brains of people who committed suicide.

Media Cybernetics Offers Free Image Processing Consultations

Researchers learn sophisticated image analysis techniques using their own images BETHESDA, Md.--(Business Wire)-- Media Cybernetics, the scientific imaging software company, has added an exciting, new tool to their website that enables individuals to upload their images and receive a free image processing consultation. This new image upload feature gives researchers the opportunity to describe their imaging challenge and receive feedback on how they can accomplish their desired outcome using image processing tools. This tool allows Media Cybernetics' representatives to consult with and train researchers-using their own images- resulting in a significantly reduced learning curve. Researchers benefit immediately, improving their research processes through the use of advanced image analysis techniques, including counting objects, tracking th

Study: Some doctor bloggers tell all

Although doctor or nurse bloggers might think they're anonymous, they sometimes inadvertently end up revealing their identities and, as a result, their patients', according to a study. Researchers reviewed five entries each for 271 blogs written by people who said they were a physician or a nurse, and they found that 114 of the blogs described patients. More than half of the bloggers provided enough information in their text or images to reveal their identities, and 45 of the blogs that described interactions with individual patients included enough information for them to identify their doctors or themselves. Three blogs went so far to show recognizable photos of patients.

Two genes that could prevent HIV infection discovered, says study

Researchers discover new genes for IBD in Children

Singapore, Sept 2, 2008: Researchers have discovered two new genes that increase the risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in childhood. While further study is needed to identify the specific disease-causing mutations in these new genes, the researchers say the genes are particularly strong candidates to be added to the list of genes already known to affect IBD.

Subject to Change

prostoalex writes "Most companies would call themselves innovative and would claim they're delivering an above-average service to their customers. Yet, their customers opinions might differ. If you drill a company on their innovation practices, they would probably mention two approaches they employ: 1. Their research department meets with target groups, compiles presentations for the upper management, which then occasionally hands those reports over to the development department. 2. Their research or marketing department comes up with competitive matrix of the products available from competition. In a meeting then, executives see that their product is missing a feature, and hence the development department is assigned the task of adding 'an Internet-enabled installer' to the product, since everybody else offers them, thereby creating mark

Panasonic to Mass Produce 150-Inch TV, Requires Your Own Nuclear Power Plant

Panasonic is saying that they are going to start mass-manufacturing their 150-inch 2,106 x 4,096 display, which obviously is not directed at consumers unless a) they have their own Quad-HD video material to play and b) they have their own nuclear power plant, since this beast eats 1,500 watts, which in the Michael Phelps scale is 243 pizzas, two roasted pigs stuffed with chicken breasts, five chili burritos and two dozen plates of pasta with veal meatballs. Hmmm. Meatballs. [Engadget]

Logged In or Out, Facebook Is Watching You

kaos07 links to this ZDNet story, according to which "Researchers at software vendor CA have discovered that social networking site Facebook is able to track the buying habits of its users on affiliated third-party sites even when they are logged out of their account or have opted out of its controversial 'Beacon' tracking service. Responding to privacy concerns, Facebook has since moved to reassure users that it only tracks and publishes data about their purchases if they are both logged in to Facebook and have opted-in to having this information listed on their profile. But in 'extremely disconcerting' findings that directly contradict these assurances, researchers at CA's Security Advisory service have found that data about these transactions are sent to Facebook regardless of a user's actions.

Market Report -- Short Stories (JAVA)

Sun Microsystems . Target $17 to $12. Cross Research downgrades JAVA to Hold from Buy and lowers their tgt to $12 from $17 after JAVA pre-announced Q4 earnings with potential upside to their EPS estimates, indicating some operational improvement over the previous quarter. They expect the stock to be up as the release should alleviate some concerns regarding a potential miss. Scientists Discover the Monogamy Gene

Each cell in the human body contains about 25,000 to 35,000 genes, which carry information that determines our traits; straight or curly hair, short or long legs, and even how we smile or laugh. Each gene has a special job to do, but what happens when genes don’t work right or have changed in some way? Researchers think that altered or mutated genes may be partly to blame for lung problems, cancer and many other illnesses. And now, scientists believe a certain gene variant may be linked to marital monogamy.

Old warhorses look to shine

India begin their three-Test series at a venue where they have suffered their worst loss against Sri Lanka; the last time these two sides played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo, India were trounced by an innings and 77 runs. Sri Lanka have won just three of their 26 Tests against India but won the previous home series against the same opponents 2-1. They have fared much better against India at home, with just two losses in 12 Tests, and one series defeat in 1993. India have won ten Tests in all, six of them by an innings margin. One in two Tests has produced a result, and the results have often been one-sided - the smallest margin of victory has been by 149 (in terms of runs) and seven (in terms of wickets). EU Proposes Retroactive Copyright Extension

I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes "EU Commissioner Charlie McCreevy has unveiled a plan to retroactively extend musical copyrights by 45 years, which would make EU musical copyrights last 95 years total. Why? They're worried that musicians won't continue to collect royalties when they retire and this will give them an additional 45 years during which they won't have to produce any new music. Perhaps the only good point is that the retroactive extensions won't take effect for any works which aren't marketed in the first year after the extension. Additionally, while there are many non-musical retirees wishing they could get paid for 95 years after they finish working, McCreevy has not announced any new plans to help them."
