An international team of researchers, headed by Florida State University geologist Yang Wang, has unearthed evidence of a recent and rapid increase in elevation of the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau, a vast region in Central Asia about three miles high that occupies nearly four times the area of the state of Texas. Their findings run counter to the established history of the plateau's rise to its towering present-day stature, carrying implications for global climate change in the recent geologic past.

This week, the Science Weekly team discuss dark energy and the even darker matter of the gender gap with astrophysicist Sarah Bridle - recipient of a Women in Science fellowship. It's sponsored by a well-known cosmetics company - is it worth it? Do awards like this actually help to de-beard science? And isn't this a wider societal problem anyway?

The state of the assets of bankrupt Silver State Helicopters is providing clues about how the troubled company was run before its shutdown and Chapter 7 (liquidation) bankruptcy filing in February. At the time of its closing, Silver State was the largest civilian helicopter school in the U.S., with 2,400 students and more than 700 employees distributed among 33 locations. Former employees and students have charged the school and Silver State-approved student loan originators with various financial improprieties, and several states attorneys general are investigating the circumstances surrounding the bankruptcy.

Businesses in the Albany, N.Y., region got a slice of state aid on Monday to fund their employee training and internship programs. Most of the $981,000 in state funds supports regional efforts to attract and train skilled workers in "emerging industries" including health care, nanotechnology, energy and advanced manufacturing. The remaining $430,000 was set aside to support worker training programs and internships at businesses. Statewide, the Department of Labor announced $26 million in similar investments. Patricia Smith, the state's labor commissioner, also touted federal tax credits for employers who hire young employees, including teenagers, who live in certain eligible areas. "We have to get a digitally prepared work force ... especially if AMD moves into town," said Dan Gentile, an area work force official with the New York Associa

thebestsophist writes "A couple months ago, Scientists and Engineers for America, Science Debate 2008, and a bunch of other science organizations sent McCain, Obama, and all the Congressional candidates a bunch of questions on science and technology. Topics included biosecurity, genetics research, and national security, as well as the more common questions on research and education. Well, Senator Obama just answered." Senator McCain has not responded to the questionnaire at this point in time, but the site has a profile of his views and actions relating to science policy, which provides a good basis for comparing the candidates' stances. We've previously discussed the differences between the two candidates' technology platforms. According to a recent NPR story, both candidates intend to keep politics out of science.

As I noted in an earlier post, eBay reported astonishing growth in its latest quarterly numbers. When you examine the numbers closely, much of the growth is coming from markets outside of the United States. The U.S. market accounted for 32% growth. That’s less than half the growth rate for markets outside the U.S., which grew 76% year-over-year.

"I was very interested in this piece from Computerworld U.K., titled 'Can we give every school child in the U.K. a Linux notebook and still save money?' It provides a cost breakdown of what it would take to give every student a Linux notebook, compared to the costs schools in the U.K. currently face for software licenses, other technology fees, and printing and photocopying. According to the author of this story, the fees for printing and photocopying alone at schools are staggering--to the point where if electronic materials replaced much of the printed materials, there would be enough money to give each student a low-cost Linux notebook. Would this work in the U.S...?"

In this Q&A with Nina Fedoroff, science adviser to the US secretary of state, topics run from genetically modified food to the need for scientific advocacy in government. Fedoroff's take on GM food is simple: "There’s almost no food that isn’t genetically modified. Genetic modification is the basis of all evolution." As for science in government, Fedoroff makes the case that scientific alliances can succeed where other kinds of diplomacy fail -- "because science is more collaborative than other types of endeavors," she tells the New York Times. "It aspires to more democratic principles than many political systems because we have an external reference."
