The Evolution of Online Media Search Gives Birth to Dizzler - Free music and multi-media mega-search engine and media player giant, Dizzler, announces official website launch and established presence in the playable media search technology arena today at Dizzler. The evolution of online technology has allowed us to bear witness to the exponential growth of search engine giants like Google and Yahoo. Attempting to replicate just a fraction of their success in the area of music search, many websites failed and became fading stars in the cyber universe due to copyright infringement, backlashes by music artists and the inability to integrate with newer web 2.0 and social networking websites. While the remnants of these free music, ring tones, video and gaming websites still struggle with copyright infringement and user annoyance with adware a

Black holes are sometimes huge cosmic beasts, billions of times the mass of our sun, and sometimes petite with just a few times the sun's mass. But do black holes also come in size medium? A new study suggests that, for the most part, the answer is no.

What do black holes, magnetars and supernovae have in common? They all emit X-rays. But it's difficult, if not impossible to study certain aspects of the X-ray emissions from these powerful objects. And there's much we don't understand about how black holes distort space-time around them, or how magnetars affect their surroundings, or how cosmic rays are accelerated by shocks in supernova remnants. A proposed new NASA mission called Gravity and Extreme Magnetism (GEMS), will use a new technique to study what has been unattainable until now. GEMS won't study the X-ray emission of these objects directly, but will build up a picture indirectly by measuring the polarization of X-rays emitted from these violent regions.

Although we can't actually see a black hole, we can see the black hole's effect on nearby matter. But even that is difficult because infrared light from clouds of dust and gas usually pollutes the view. But astronomers have found a way to get a clean view of the disks surrounding black holes by using a polarizing filter in the infrared. This technique works in particular when the region immediately surrounding the black hole emits a small amount of scattered light. Since scattered light is polarized, astronomers can use a filter that works like polarized sunglasses on large telescopes to detect this small amount of scattered light and measure it with unprecedented accuracy. Scientists have theorized these luminous disks existed around black holes, but until now have not been able to observe them.

Researchers of hybrid solar cell fabrication at Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU) in Munich have ordered an advanced sputtering tool from U.K.-based Surrey NanoSystems. The tool will be used in the creation of high-efficiency interconnection templates for organic materials, thereby greatly increasing the efficiency of the cells, according to LMU. The tool, a configuration of Surrey NanoSystems' Gamma PVD sputtering tool, will be put into operation at the LMU's Department of Physics and Centre for NanoScience. LMU specified some features of the tool, including the facility to aid in the production of uniform aluminium films for the formation of porous alumina membranes for application to a variety of substrates. The researchers will also be equipped with the resources to deposit barrier layers and other inter-layer films in researching a

An instrument originally designed for detecting the malicious use of biological pathogens has potential for use in the public health sector to rapidly screen people for tuberculosis. In experiments over the past year, a research team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has used their system to detect a tuberculosis surrogate, even when it is surrounded by sputum and mucus-like substances. They also were able to differentiate between two similar bacteria, distinguishing between an avirulent strain of tuberculosis and a similar bacterium, Mycobacterium semegmatis. Their research, using a system called Single-Particle Aerosol Mass Spectrometry, or SPAMS, is described in Analytical Chemistry.

Ars Technica is running a story about recently enacted legislation in Louisiana which will allow school board officials to "approve supplemental classroom materials specifically for the critique of scientific theories" such as evolution and global warming. The full text of the Act (PDF) is also available. Quoting: "The text of the [Louisiana Science Education Act] suggests that it's intended to foster critical thinking, calling on the state Board of Education to 'assist teachers, principals, and other school administrators to create and foster an environment within public elementary and secondary schools that promotes critical thinking skills, logical analysis, and open and objective discussion of scientific theories.' Unfortunately, it's remarkably selective in its suggestion of topics that need critical thinking, as it cites scientific

In the past 10,000 years, people have been evolving rather quickly, though this speed doesn't seem fast enough for everyone, says this US News and World Report article. Anthropologist John Hawks points out that some people can now digest lactose and others have some resistance to smallpox or malaria even though those genes used to be rare. But today's world is changing so quickly that Oxford's Nick Bostrom says biological evolution isn't keeping up and some people are turning to preimplantation genetic diagnosis to choose some of their child's traits. However, bioethicist Thomas Murray adds, "Our capacity to do these kinds of intentional designs is vastly overrated."
