Smaller, more accurate, higher performance and lower priced - that is the formula for success for micro- and nanoelectronics. Miniaturisation plays a crucial economic role to-day and contributes significantly to the key technologies of the 21st century; however, the smaller the structures, the more susceptible they are to minimal contaminations.

Measurements by the MAGIC Telescope (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov Telescope) on La Palma have shown that the universe is more transparent to high-energy radiation than previously assumed. A new publication in “Science” with ETH Zurich participation describes how measurements of high-energy gamma radiation from 5.3 billion light years away are yielding new knowledge about the nature of the universe.

Students from OSU’s Radiation Physics Laboratory built and successfully launched a cosmic radiation detector this summer that reached the edge of outer space. Carried by a helium-filled balloon 12 inches in diameter, the detector flew for more than two hours and reached 104,000 feet in altitude. The device recorded radiation levels at the varying altitudes – information that will be used by NASA to develop instrumentation for space flight.

Researchers at New York University's Center for Developmental Genetics report that the photoreceptors in an insect's eye can change their traditional functions during metamorphosis. The researchers found that when photoreceptors responsible for detecting the color green die off during metamorphosis a second class of photoreceptors--those responsible for detecting the color blue--then fill the role of detecting the color green. These rare switches, the authors speculate, are likely the result of changing life patterns.
