Mercator Announces US$42 million Silver Sale Transaction with Silver Wheaton

VANCOUVER, March 17 /CNW/ - Mercator Minerals Ltd. ("Mercator") is pleased to announce today that it and its wholly-owned affiliate have signed an agreement with an affiliate ("Silver Wheaton") of Silver Wheaton Corp. for the sale of the life-of-mine silver production from Mercator's Mineral Park copper/molybdenum mine in Arizona. Under the agreement, Silver Wheaton will make an up-front payment of US$42 million in cash to Mercator's affiliate. Upon delivery of the silver, Silver Wheaton will then also pay Mercator's affiliate in cash the lesser of the silver spot price or US$3.90 per ounce of silver (escalated by 1% per annum starting in the fourth year of silver production).

Silver Wheaton to buy Mercator's silver output

Silver Wheaton Corp., a Vancouver-based silver producer, has agreed to buy all the silver produced by Mercator Minerals Ltd. at its copper-molybdenum-silver Mineral Park Mine in Arizona. When the deal closes, Silver Wheaton will pay Mercator $42-million (U.S.) in cash to acquire the silver produced over the life of the Mineral Park Mine. Michael Surratt, president and CEO of Mercator, said the transaction will help his company focus on its primary metals - copper and molybdenum, an industrial metal used to make stainless steel. SLW (TSX) fell 96 cents to $18.22, ML (TSX) fell 43 cents to $10.32.

Too much of a good thing could be harmful to the environment. For years, scientists have known about silver's ability to kill harmful bacteria and, recently, have used this knowledge to create consumer products containing silver nanoparticles. Now, a University of Missouri researcher has found that silver nanoparticles also may destroy benign bacteria that are used to remove ammonia from wastewater treatment systems.
