Computer Science Dept. Receives Robotics Award

Buffalo, NY – The Canisius College Computer Science Department has been awarded funding from the Institute for Personal Robotics in Education (IPRE) to further its computer science curriculum through the use of personal robots. Canisius was one of 28 colleges and high schools across the country to receive the award, which includes $1,500 in funding and a Scribbler robot.

GC ART 2008 Demonstrates: Gaming is Art!

For what is now the third time, visitors with an interest in art will find the GC ART exhibit section a big attraction in Hall 2 at the Leipzig Exhibition Centre. During Europe's benchmark fair for interactive entertainment, the GC - Games Convention, the four exhibitions "Space Invaders. From Outer Space", "History&Culture", "Machinima" and "Digital Beauties" will demonstrate from 21 to 24 August how art and digital worlds blend together. Several workshops give guests at the show the opportunity to design small art works for themselves.

Robots reinvigorate computer science classrooms

August 8, 2008 Education has long been based around the three R's, but now for computer science students throughout the U.S., a fourth R is making ground - Robotics. A program that began in 2006 through the Institute for Personal Robots in Education (IPRE) using robots as the circuit breaker in introductory computer science courses is being expanded to 28 more high schools and universities. The grants give access to a share of $250,000 along with the tools that form the basis of the scheme: a book sized robot called Scribbler and its Bluetooth enabled add-on board known as Fluke, plus IPRE software and class text. Gizmag spoke to Dr. Tucker Balch, director of IPRE and professor of interactive computing at the Georgia Tech College of Computing, to learn more.

New Media and Museums in Eastern Europe

New media art is no stranger to eastern Europe and the Balkans; from the early net.art of Vuc Cosic to the collective work of Apsolutno, these regions were the proving ground for many groundbreaking experiments in media, politics, and art. So the upcoming international symposium on (New) Media Art in Museums this October in Croatia signals that the region's consideration of media art has come full circle from unknown outsiders and agitators to curated collectibles (not too dissimilar to the path traced in other regions or for other "avant-gardes"). The intersection of cultural institutions like museums with new media art continues to confound both artists and curators alike. No standard institutional model has arisen for the collecting of such work, for how to frame it in the overall programs of the museum, nor how to preserve the work.

Google Forging Connections with University of Washington, but Still Has a Ways To Go

Last week, the University of Washington’s Computer Science and Engineering department hosted a special workshop sponsored by Google and the National Science Foundation. The goal of the three-day program was to instruct professors on how to teach Google-style computing—which includes harnessing huge amounts of digital data and doing “cluster computing� over large-scale, networked servers. The weekend before that, Google also sponsored a workshop at UW to teach high-school math and science teachers about computer science—everything from programming and robotics to cryptography and security.
