13 August 2008—This week, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)—the world’s most powerful particle accelerator—began test runs, sending a stream of protons around a quarter of its 27-kilometer circumference. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (known as CERN), in Geneva, Switzerland, where the LHC is housed, says the tests are part of the preparations for the machine’s projected 10 September start-up date.

PhysicsDavid writes "Collaborators on the BaBar experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center have detected and measured, for the first time after a 30-year search, the lowest energy particle of the 'bottomonium' family, called the eta-sub-b. Bottomonium consists of a bottom quark and an anti-bottom quark bound together by the strong force. The discovery fills in a missing piece of quark physics that will help reveal the nature and behavior of the quarks and the strong force."

Bad news spreads fast in today's world, so when Sony released the 2.40 PS3 firmware update last week it wasn't long before reports of problems started to emerge, with some being unlucky enough to brick their console with the update. Sony therefore made the decision to take down the 2.40 update while they ironed out the problems, with the result being today's 2.41 firmware. Sony are now confident that the issues with 2.40 have been resolved, and have extended their apologies to the Playstation community for any inconvenience caused. 2.41 doesn't add any additional features over 2.40, and Sony hasn't said what it will do about the consoles that were bricked by the 2.40 firmware yet.
