(Nanowerk Spotlight) It wasn't market forces that landed a man on the moon; and It wasn't market forces that led France to build a nuclear energy infrastructure that now enables it to generate some 75% of its entire energy needs from nuclear power (just an example of what energy policy can do; let's not get into a discussion here of nuclear energy, though). But somehow, the leading political and industrial forces in the United States – together with China the largest emitter of greenhouse gases on the planet – think that a task so fundamental and massive as fighting global warming and environmental pollution should mostly be left 'to the market'. Unfortunately, its just a matter of economic reality that 'the market' will not invest in new energy technologies on a large scale until existing ways of producing energy become more expens

Linking Social Housing and Energy Efficiency explores the link between the theory, policy and practice of energy-efficient social housing. The theory addresses the general question of what is energy-efficient housing and why a lot of social housing is not energy efficient. Current policy and programs in Ontario are reviewed to discover what incentives and opportunities exist to enhance the energy efficiency of affordable housing. The author also considers social housing and the environmental policy issue of energy conservation. Three case studies of social housing in Ottawa are used to support a series of recommendations.

Skyrocketing energy costs. Carbon footprints. Global warming. We're consumed with the concerns about consumption of energy. And well we should be. Our industries, our economy, our lifestyles and our environment are on the line. Some of the best minds on the planet are pursuing solutions -- and a number of them, I'm proud to say, are nanotechnology based. This month, I'll be part of a panel discussing Thermal Nanotechnology Solutions at NanoBusiness 2008, a gathering of some of the best scientific and business minds in nanotech. As excited as I am to share information about work on a nanofilm for windows to lower energy needed for heating and cooling, I'm more excited to hear about the work others are doing. I've been investigating some of the technology on the agenda, and it's pretty hot stuff.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that DOE will invest up to $13.7 million, over three years (Fiscal Years 2008 - 2010), for 11 university-led projects that will focus on developing advanced solar photovoltaic (PV) technology manufacturing processes and products. These projects are integral to President Bush's Solar America Initiative, which aims to make solar energy cost-competitive with conventional forms of electricity by 2015. Increasing the use of solar energy is also critical to diversifying our nation's energy sources in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on foreign oil. Combined with a minimum university and industry cost share of 20%, up to $17.4 million will be invested in these projects.

I am using 128-bit WEP encryption for my wireless network at home. It requires a 26-character encryption key. When I try to connect my Archos 605 WIFI to the network, it will accept only a 13-character encryption key. According to the user manual for the 605, it should accept the 26-character key, but I have tried everything and it will not accept the key with that many characters. I have made sure to install the latest firmware. Anybody else experiencing this problem? Anybody able to input the 26-character key? I have an inquiry in to the Archos technical support but haven't heard back from them yet.

A year ago, we could name about 10 genes that work this way. Now, we know of 1,000 in flies alone and we suspect there could be many more in humans, said Gilmour. Even HIV genes have a paused RNA polymerase. Release of this pause may be key to activating HIV replication of otherwise latent viruses. Taking advantage of this new understanding might enable the development of more effective anti-viral drugs, he said.

Nuclear energy production must increase by more than 10 percent each year from 2010 to 2050 to meet all future energy demands and replace fossil fuels, but this is an unsustainable prospect. According to a report published in Inderscience's International Journal of Nuclear Governance, Economy and Ecology such a large growth rate will require a major improvement in nuclear power efficiency otherwise each new power plant will simply cannibalize the energy produced by earlier nuclear power plants.

Now the current trend is focusing on energy more than ever, regardless whether to cut costs at the end of the month or the simple knowledge that over half of the United State's energy is produced from coal, therefore lower energy consumption translates into less coal pollution. When many consumers are penny pinching wherever they can, companies like Gigabyte and ASUS have decided to begin marketing energy saving motherboards not to a niche market, but to the masses. For this article we will put one of these new Gigabyte Dynamic Energy Saver (DES) motherboards to the test with a power hungry Q6600 QuadCore processor. We will see if you can really save power without compromising your computers performance or more importantly its stability. By the end of this review we will find out if DES shows any appreciable value or is just more marketin

Minute particles with great potential in the energy technology sector - Continuation of 60 million euros research program Exploring the potential of nanotechnology for energy supply - this is the focus of the current invitation for applications under E.ON's International Research Initiative. This year a sum of 6 million euros is again available for this purpose. Teams and researchers from all over the world can apply to E.ON to obtain support for projects dealing with the use of nanotechnology in fields such as energy storage, electricity transmission, carbon capture and storage or energy saving through Nano LEDs for example. With this focus E.ON is backing a still very young research discipline because experts assume that the minute particles ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers in size can greatly benefit energy use that is both more effi
