The Chemistry s Gone Is No Longer an Excuse to Break Up: related news

'The Chemistry's Gone' Is No Longer an Excuse to Break Up

Swiss DNA-based dating service GenePartner has launched, and it's cheap, says this post at TechCrunch. "The Switzerland-based company says they can use a $199 DNA test (compare to $1,000 for 23andMe) to help you find your perfect match, statistically speaking." The company hopes to partner with US dating websites, and if they can avoid current US restrictions on personal genetics testing, they're golden. "The future of dating is DNA tests and buccal swabs, so get used to it," says the post.

TV-B-Gone SHP Looks Like an iPhone, and We Will Not Take the Bait

OK, so the new TV-B-Gone SHP (super high power) is designed to look like an iPhone. It appears to be designed just for us here at Gizmodo, embodying two things that, for better or for worse, we're known for. But no matter what this thing looks like, there ain't no way we're getting within 10 feet of a TV-B-Gone again. Even if it is an upgraded model with eight powerful infrared emitters that can turn off 90% of the world's TVs. No. No, ma'am. [Maker Shed via Ubergizmo]

'Green Chemistry' is Not an Oxymoron

To me, chemistry was just no different than other sciences. Just as it is defined in the dictionary, chemistry is the science that deals with the composition and properties of substances and various elementary forms of matter.

US No Longer the World's Internet Hub

museumpeace brings us a New York Times story about how internet traffic is increasingly flowing around the US as web-based industries catch up in other parts of the world. Other issues, such as the Patriot Act, have made foreign companies wary about having their data on US servers. From the NYTimes: "Internet industry executives and government officials have acknowledged that Internet traffic passing through the switching equipment of companies based in the United States has proved a distinct advantage for American intelligence agencies. In December 2005, The New York Times reported that the National Security Agency had established a program with the cooperation of American telecommunications firms that included the interception of foreign Internet communications.

To Boldly Go Where No Mento Has Gone Before

rjwoodhead writes "This past weekend, my entire family learned what it's like to float in freefall aboard G-Force One (recently featured on the Mythbusters' Moon Hoax show). Being science-lovers, we wanted to do some kind of original experiment. So we decided to test whether the Diet Coke & Mentos reaction was affected by the lack of bubble convection in microgravity. At the link you can find the story of how the experiment evolved and how we talked Space Adventures into letting us fool around with sticky and corrosive cola and candy inside their nice clean airplane, as well as high-speed video of the results."

Spending too much on my cats, part two: Should I buy a Litter Robot?

Well, it's been three months since I adopted Ruby and Dolly Parton and despite a few mishapsa little pee on the bed, my ceramic Buddha no longer has a head and the bottoms of my dresses now have a kind of "de-constructed" lookthings have gone swimmingly. I love these cats and I can't imagine my life without them. What I can imagine my life without is the smell of their litter boxes in my not-very-big apartment. We've tried all kinds of litter. The natural ones smell within an hour and the chemical ones don't smell, but scare me (some are made with known carcinogens. No, no, no.). Because I can't literally be manning the box after every visit, and because I equally don't love the scent when I get home, I really don't know what to do. I've heard good things about the Litter Robot, which waits seven minutes after your cat leaves the bo

Whitewash looms as England target second spot

Are England really the second-best one-day team in the world? It's a preposterous notion, and yet, by the time Kevin Pietersen's men go to bed in the early hours of Thursday morning, it could well be an officially-recognised fact. Having begun the series in sixth place in the ICC rankings, England have already climbed to No. 3, and one more win will enable them to displace South Africa at No. 2 - and their unbridled dominance in the first four matches of the NatWest Series means that that prospect is very much on the cards. South Africa's ageing one-day outfit has been no match for a resurgent England, for whom the pace, aggression and enthusiasm of Steve Harmison and Andrew Flintoff has been the key factors. If the weather holds, it's hard to envisage anything other than another England win.

$250 Freescale-Based "Green" "Cloud" Computer

An anonymous reader sends word of the CherryPal, a tiny desktop computer that its maker says will consume just 2 watts. It uses a Freescale processor that runs Linux and has no moving parts. The CherryPal has integrated software and an embedded Linux (based on Debian) that has been stripped down to support Open Office, Firefox, iTunes, instant messaging, and multimedia access locally. More applications are available in the cloud, and 50 GB of cloud storage is included. It comes without keyboard or mouse but with ports for VGA, USB, Ethernet, and built-in Wi-Fi. It's claimed that the CherryPal will boot up in 20 seconds from 4 GB of flash. They've buried Linux so that the end user doesn't see it; the entire UI is presented through Firefox. The CherryPal site says: "There's no software or upgrades to install, no risk of viruses, and no oper

No scent. No sex. If a male Japanese beetle is unable to detect the sex pheromone released by a female, he wont be able to locate her and reproduce.

No upsets for Aussies, on the pitch

Australia made sure another lapse of discipline by Andrew Symonds had no on-field bearing, thrashing Bangladesh by 180 runs in the opening one-day cricket international at TIO Stadium yesterday.

No conspiracy behind dealer pricing

Why does the Toyota dealership in Daytona Beach, Fla., deem it good practice to add $3,000 to $6,000 to their Prius manufacturer suggested retail price, while St. Augustine Toyota (45 miles away) quotes an MSRP with no markup? They are both in the Southeastern Toyota district.

Hacker Will Break iPhone Security on Video

After iPhone users discovered a major security flaw exposing their private data, Wired.com published a how-to on securing the iPhone. But yikes -- apparently that's not enough, as a hacker has stepped up to the plate to demonstrate how to break through iPhone's security measures.

Beijing's 798 art district, a cultural landmark in what was once a secret military factory complex, has gotten a facelift for the ongoing Olympic Games.

Gone are the days of no streetlights, no taxis, no parking lots and no public toilets. The district has finally been upgraded by the government to match its role as an art hub of some 400 galleries, design studios, exhibition spaces, shops and restaurants.

Why Would Anyone Choose Windows over Linux?

"Well, after a very quick installation and next-to-no instruction, she was back to her happy place typing acronym after acronym in Pidgen. And guess what? No restarts. No crashes. No worries about viruses. In fact, I have yet to hear a peep out of her since her machine adopted Linux. This is the epitome of the average computer user Im speaking of. A Myspace, IM, e-mail junkie who needs to write the occasional report and browse Ebay."

No iPhone Price War In India; No Visual Voicemail Or iTunes For Singapore iPhone Buyers

For two brief days, Indian iPhone fans held out hope that they might be able to get the gadget for less than the $715 price tag that Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) India put on the 8 gigabyte model, and $830 for the 16 gigabyte one. But there will be no price war, as Bharti Airtel, the other Indian carrier to sell the iPhone, released its prices today, matching Vodafones. As pointed out earlier, this is big money even for a professional Indian IT worker whose average salary ranges from $12,000 to $24,000. Remember, too, that there is no 3G service yet in India and the phone, the paper believes, will be locked to either the Vodafone or Airtel network.

'Superatoms' Open Window to Nanoparticle Chemistry

The principles behind the stability and electronic properties of miniscule nanoclusters of magnetic gold have been analyzed and described in a seminal study by researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta), Stanford University (Palo Alto, Calif.), the University of Jyvskyl (Finland) and Chalmers University of Technology (Gterborg, Sweden). Gold and sulfur atoms aggregate in specific numbers and extremely symmetrical geometries, and can mimic the chemistry of single atoms of a different element. Researchers discovered that these clusters are stable because they behave like "superatoms" and exhibit a "divide and protect" bonding structure. According to Robert Whetten, a professor at Georgia Tech's School of Physics and School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, although gold nanoparticles are widely used in many fields, nobo

Vector Linux SOHO 5.9 Deluxe -- Not Just For The Office

"The change that will probably raise the most eyebrows is that SOHO is no longer available for free download. You can purchase the two CD set of the Deluxe version from the Vector Linux CD Store for US$24.99 or download it from MadTux for $19.99. The single CD basic version is only available from MadTux at $14.99. I should point out that all the packages which make up SOHO Deluxe (with the sole exception of themes and artwork) are in the Vector Linux repositories and it is certainly possible to start with the free Standard version, do all the package upgrades and add all the missing packages to roll your own SOHO. There are also no license restrictions and there is no EULA as is found on most paid distros."

PC World doofus blames Apple for lack of DRM-free music in iTunes Store

"iTunes gave us the 99-cent song download, thus paving the way for honest people to buy music at a fair price. So why does the iTunes Store still employ digital rights management (DRM) for the majority of songs in its library? Blaming the record labels no longer holds water: AmazonMP3 and Rhapsody are among a growing number of services selling DRM-free MP3s from all the major labels, not just EMI. At least iTunes no longer charges extra for the latter's "iTunes Plus" selections, but why hasn't Apple given DRM the heave-ho once and for all? At least customers have alternatives now," Rick Broida reports for PC World.
