Newegg Defies New York Sales Tax Law

JagsLive informs us that the electronics retailer Newegg.com is defying New York lawmakers; it has suddenly stopped collecting sales tax from New York online shoppers. The "Amazon tax," which went into effect June 1, requires online merchants to collect sales tax if they have any affiliates in the state. Amazon is complying but has sued the state on constitutional grounds. Overstock.com dropped all of its New York affiliates and then joined the Amazon lawsuit. Newegg started out complying with the law on June 1, but stopped collecting taxes for New York on August 21. IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index on Wednesday showed online spending rose in July to reach a total market value of over £4.8 billion - the equivalent of £79 for every person in the UK. The Index shows that shoppers continued to spend online despite pressures on disposable income with sales rising 11.3% on June. Online retail growth draws a sharp comparison to BRC figures which showed that high street sales for July were 0.9% down on June. Apple, for a very short time, used to include the number of times an iPhone app had been downloaded right there on the App Store for everyone to see, but the count was quickly removed. Web sales as a proportion of total sales have increased tenfold in the past five years at UK-based apparel and housewares retailer N Brown Group plc, whose roots are in catalogs aimed at consumers 30 and older. AT&T: iPhone 3G sales "nearly double" original

AT&T has sold almost twice as many iPhone 3G units on launch as it did a year ago, the company has revealed today along with its results for the past quarter. The wireless carrier claims that the new handset produced "nearly double" the same amount of sales in 12 days of sales as its predecessor did for its own launch. The company also notes that the number of smartphone owners on its network has more than doubled year-over-year, with the number of customers jumping from eight percent at the end of June 2007 to 18 percent by June 2008.
