Sony: US Demand Still Strong Despite Weakening Economy

In a statement to reporters today, Stan Glasgow, president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics, said that Sony is seeing little or no sign of softer demand among U.S. consumers for its range of digital TVs, cameras and computer goods despite a weakening economy. "We are not seeing clear signs of softness. In the high end, it is hard to keep up with the full demand," he said of demand for Sony's pricier flat-panel TV models.

Sony Corp. said on Tuesday that it is seeing little or no change in the sales of its line of digital TVs, cameras and PCs during an economic slump. Sony to Start U.S. Movie Service for PS3

Sony says it will start a movie download service for its PlayStation 3 home console this summer in the United States. Kazuo Hirai, who heads Sony Corp.'s video game unit, said the service will be offered in Japan and Europe at later dates, although details won't be available until next month. Hirai said the company will strengthen its network services and further cut costs to achieve profitability in the Sony gaming business in the current fiscal year ending March 2009.

Sony Professional Solutions appoints channel development manager

Sony Ireland has appointed David Byrne to the position of channel development manager for video-conferencing and CCTV within its business division, Sony Professional Solutions. David joins Sony Ireland Ltd from Digicom where he held the position of corporate sales - audio-visual consultant. Commenting on the appointment, Raj Pandya, general manager, B2B Channels, Sony UK, said: "David's appointment marks the further growth of Sony Professional Solutions in the Irish market.
