Many have heard about the XEL-1, which Sony claims to be the first commercial TV based on OLED technology, but less well known is that the device apparently has a few major downsides—and not just because its display is only a measily 11" across. According to EE Times, the XEL-1 also has worrying design defects.

Previously, I looked at the Apple TV in isolation, to see how it fits as a digital hub. Apple isn't the only company that wants to have its device at the center of your home entertainment though, nor the only ones who want its storefront to be the one you use to download TV and movies. So in this next installment, I shall compare the Apple TV to what I think will be its closest rival, the Microsoft Xbox 360. Yes, you read that right. I am going to compare a game console with the Apple TV, but the comparison is not as far fetched as you might think. Both have storefronts where you can download TV episodes and movies. Both will rent you content in both HD and SD, and both will let you stream your own media through them to your TV and speakers.

An anonymous reader writes "Sony CEO Ryoji Chubachi knows something we don't. At a press conference, he announced Sony's plan to increase Blu-ray market share to 50% of all movie discs by the end of the year. 'DVD and BD currently account for about 80% and 20%, respectively, of global demand for movie discs, Chubachi indicated. The new BD devices to be offered by Sony include models integrating an HD LCD TV with BD recording functionality, Chubachi pointed out. Sony has relied mainly on the PlayStation 3 (PS3) to promote BD, and sales of the game console will increase along with the offering by top Hollywood studios of new BD movies, Chubachi noted. However, Sony will extend its BD promotion from the current focus on the PS3 and BD players/recorders to IT devices, Chubachi pointed out.

An anonymous reader points out a Los Angeles Times report that Sony is planning on making movies and TV shows available for download through the PS3 "as early as this summer." Sony hopes to make use of the roughly 4 million PS3s already sold in the US to compete with similar services such as XBox Live, which began offering video downloads over a year ago. "One of the service's greatest obstacles may be Sony's own culture. Sony Chairman and Chief Executive Howard Stringer has been battling a corporate silo mentality in which divisions within his company work in isolation, undermining new initiatives. The PlayStation group in Foster City, Calif., has been notoriously aloof. Once, a former executive said, it scuttled plans for a movie subscription service for the PlayStation Portable even though Sony Pictures had supported the initiative.

Sony is developing its own response to the Apple TV, the company's Electronics chief Stan Glasgow has said in a roundtable discssion with Gizmodo. The executive notes that his company is "working very hard" on such a device and suggests that it would not necessarily be tied to the BRAVIA Internet Link feature from the company's HDTV sets, which lets them browse a narrow range of content without a dedicated computer or media device. Glasgow declines to provide most details but hints that access to the PlayStation Network will spread "over the next year" to other devices besides game consoles and may not be limited to gaming-related content.

Sony Ericsson, Sony's joint venture with Ericsson , is the world's fourth-largest mobile phone maker but ranks just sixth in the Japanese market, whose heavy development costs make it tough to make a profit. It will stop development and production for DoCoMo after supplying new models this summer, the Nikkei said. However, it plans to keep DoCoMo as a customer by buying mobile phones from other Japanese makers and selling them under the Sony Ericsson brand, the newspaper said. No one at Sony could be immediately reached for comment. Sony considered exiting the Japanese mobile phone market altogether, but has decided to keep developing and making phones for No. 2 operator KDDI Corp <9433.T> for now, given their alliance in music distribution, the Nikkei said.

Sony's "Fresh Start" initiative offered customers the chance to pay $50 extra to have their new machine "scrubbed clean" prior to shipping. Theoretically, this scrubbing would remove all of the usual bloatware, plus Sony exclusives like DRM-encrypted movies that require an additional $10 to unlock and play. While Sony is officially blaming the $50 charge on "internal miscommunication", I have to wonder whether Sony's decision was prompted by a consumer backlash as powerful as Coca-Cola felt when it introduced "New Coke". The upside here - other than Sony's wise policy reversal - is that we are again given proof that if sufficient numbers of consumers scream loudly enough, even the biggest corporate giant can be made to listen.
