SonySony A900 SLR review : Although being the only model in the DSLR assortment of Sony, the Alpha 100 was an amazing success. Simply ruling out all prejudice which sprung mainly from the more traditional world of photography. The consumer was 'ready' for a Sony digital SLR camera and its successor in 2007, the Alpha 700, that was introduced as a middle segment DSLR camera. Six months later, Sony launched a threesome new Alpha DSLR cameras (Alpha 200/300/350) with which Sony was able to deliver an entirely new line of Alpha cameras. Only one DSLR was missing in the line-up; the Sony A900, a high resolution DSLR camera that would establish Sony as a serious DSLR manufacturer belonging to the top 3 ranking. Read our full

HILTON TARRANT: South African consumers are under pressure, but that's not stopping global electronics giant Sony from opening branded retail stores in the country. The first Sony Centre on the African continent will open at Menlyn Park east of Pretoria tomorrow morning. It's not the first such store in Gauteng. HP recently opened a global pilot store, The HP Experience, in Sandton City and there are other international players lining up to open up their own retail shops in the country ahead of 2010. The Sony Centre joins over 200 others around the world and, considering that the company is a manufacturer, it typically looks for partners with experience in retail to actually run the stores. MD of Sony South Africa, Matthew Lang, explains this strategy.

"More than two years after the largest battery recall in the electronics industry, Sony batteries have been fingered again as the culprit in more than 40 worldwide incidents of laptops overheating. Sony and the Consumer Product Safety Commission will announce Thursday afternoon that Sony is supporting the voluntary recall of 100,000 notebook battery packs powered by Sony's 2.15Ah lithium ion cells. Thirty-five thousand of those were sold in the U.S., and 65,000 in international markets. Sony says it has shipped 260 million of these batteries since 2002."

In July 2006, Agere Systems sued Sony, claiming that Sony knowingly and willfully infringed on its patent for a "wireless local area network apparatus." Sony sought to have Agere's patents declared valid, claiming that Agere had obtained them improperly and that Sony had the rights to the technologies from a previous deal with AT&T and Lucent. Now, more than two years later, the jury has ruled in Agere's favor, ordering Sony to pay $18.5 million to Agere.

Back when it seemed like everyone you knew had a Walkman, Sony was the giant of portable entertainment. But when cassettes and CDs gave way to MP3s, Sony wobbled. In stepped Apple with the iPod, and the Japanese giant has struggled to catch up ever since. Last year, however, Sony shifted its attention to the humble book and launched the Sony Reader – a sleek, lightweight, portable electronic book, capable of storing up to 160 volumes at a time. In September, Waterstone's partnered with Sony to sell the newest version of the Reader, the PRS-505. So, have electronic books finally arrived and will the humble paperback be banished to history's recycling bin?

Recent ads released by Barack Obama and John McCain have set off an ad war between the candidates. McCain has released two ads tying Barack Obama to former Fannie Mae CEOs Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson. The Obama campaign says an E-mail proves that Raines is not an adviser, but the McCain campaign points to recent stories in the Washington Post to support its assertion. Conservative bloggers aren't happy about a Time blogger who says that McCain is playing the race card with the Raines ad (Raines is African-American) because of images in the ad and the omission of Obama's tie to Johnson, who is white. They point out that McCain has since released an ad about Johnson. For their part, the Obama campaign has released a Spanish-language ad, "Dos Caras," attacking McCain on immigration and linking the candidate to Rush Limbaugh.

This is a bit ironic. T-Mobile USA has turned to AOL (NYSE: TWX) to help sell the Google (NSDQ: GOOG) phone. AdAge.com reports that the carrier is buying 1 billion ad impressions across AOL’s Platform-A ad network next week on Monday and Tuesday that will help promote the phone being called the T-Mobile G1. The purchase marks Platform-A’s single biggest online ad buy. The network serves up to 3 billion ad impressions a day and reaches 90 percent of Internet users. The ads will run on AOL sites such as AOL Music, AOL TV, Engadget and TMZ, as well as many of the sites on ComScore’s top 100. The report said the campaign will reach 81 million people, and that it will cost about $1.5 million for the 1 billion ad impressions, putting the CPM at $1.

Interest in mobile advertising is up, but inventory is not be keeping pace with demand, a trend that may only increase as we head towards a recession. Already, evidence is surfacing that big brands are cutting back on their mobile ad buys, which will make AdMob’s job more difficult since it already doesn’t have enough ad inventory to fill every request coming from publishers. AdMob has been closing the gap slowly, but it’s still not able to fill all of its ad requests. For instance, in the U.S., AdMob served 1.79 billion ads last month, but had requests for 1.99 billion, and globally, it served 4.53 billion ads compared to 5.07 billion requests. As a caveat, AdMob said sometimes it chooses not to send ads. “AdMob also has certain minimum performance thresholds and limits ads served to low-performing inventory, which also can ne

Sony Corp. has delayed sales of LittleBigPlanet, one of its most widely anticipated video games, by at least one week in the United States, after finding potentially offensive background music in the game. The puzzle-solving, community-based game, published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3, will begin shipping to retail shops during the week of Oct. 27, Sony said on the game's Web site yesterday. Its release was originally set for today. The music in question is Tapha Niang a song performed by Malian musician Toumani Diabate, a Sony spokesman said. "One of the background music tracks that was licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur'an," the company said. Reuters

When we published the Sony A900 Full-Frame: Hands-On Preview several weeks ago, the excitement about the world's highest resolution full-frame DSLR was evident in every photography forum you could find on the web. It was not as if the new Sony flagship model was a surprise, because the specifications had been detailed in broad strokes in the year since Sony announced the development of a 24.6MP 24x36mm full-frame sensor. The launch just filled in the blanks with details and answered questions like whether Sony could get their body Image Stabilization to work on a full-frame. The answer was yes they could.

Circuit City took a major blow today, according to a reliable inside source, when Sony's merchandise that was being delivered to nationwide Circuit City distribution centers was stopped in transit and ordered to return to Sony "among worries that Circuit City couldn't pay for the shipments." This development means that Circuit City is not getting any Sony products replenished until they are able to convince Sony that their credit line is reliable. And with as bad as things are looking for Circuit City at the moment, that day may never come.
