Sony confirms 80GB PS3 for Europe

SCEE boss David Reeves has revealed that the 80GB PlayStation 3 SKU, which was confirmed for North America in the E3 Sony press conference on Tuesday, will arrive into Europe on August 27, although the video download service will not make it across the Atlantic.

Sources have indicated to GamesIndustry.biz that Sony Europe boss David Reeves is due to announce that the 80GB PlayStation 3 will be released in Europe shortly.

SCEE president David Reeves confirmed at a Euro-focused press event in Santa Monica last night that an 80GB model of the PlayStation 3 will be released in Europe.

Sony Releases 2.41 PS3 Firmware

Bad news spreads fast in today's world, so when Sony released the 2.40 PS3 firmware update last week it wasn't long before reports of problems started to emerge, with some being unlucky enough to brick their console with the update. Sony therefore made the decision to take down the 2.40 update while they ironed out the problems, with the result being today's 2.41 firmware. Sony are now confident that the issues with 2.40 have been resolved, and have extended their apologies to the Playstation community for any inconvenience caused. 2.41 doesn't add any additional features over 2.40, and Sony hasn't said what it will do about the consoles that were bricked by the 2.40 firmware yet.

Sony says it will start a movie download service for its PlayStation 3 home console this summer in the United States. Kazuo Hirai, who heads Sony Corp.'s video game unit, said the service will be offered in Japan and Europe at later dates, although details won't be available until next month. Hirai said the company will strengthen its network services and further cut costs to achieve profitability in the Sony gaming business in the current fiscal year ending March 2009.

80GB PS3 release brought forward to this Friday

Excellent news if you were thinking about buying a PS3. Awful news if you've just bought one. According to a number of online retailers, Sony are bringing out their 80GB PS3 on Friday, rather than a week Friday as was previously thought.

With the Xbox 360 Pro 20GB widely rumored to sell for $299.99 beginning this Sunday, many gamers are wondering if Sony plans to respond to MSFT by reducing prices on their own PS3 console. According to Sony's CFO, the answer is no: "This year, our strategy is not to sell more quantity for PS3 but to concentrate on profitability," Oneda told a forum in Singapore. "Our plan is not to reduce the price."

160GB Sony PS3 announced for UK release in October

Well, aren't Sony just pulling it all out of the hat this week? First we're told the 80GB PS3 is coming out tomorrow, this morning we hear about the redesigned PSP and now we find out that the 160GB PS3 heavyweight will be hitting our European shelves on 31st October. We even have a price too - £339.99.
