After Sony posted the top LCD TV share in Q4’07, Samsung edged slightly higher to retake the #1 LCD TV ranking in North America for the first time since Q1’07, rising to 12.8% unit share in a very competitive category. Samsung maintained their share lead in combined flat panel TV comprising shipments of both LCD and Plasma TVs, according to preliminary findings from DisplaySearch’s latest Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report. As the wheel that is the flat-panel market share continues to go round, Samsung has claimed the top spot once again in the LCD TV market in North America for Q1 2008, overtaking Sony, and rising to achieve 12.8 per cent unit share. According to preliminary data by DisplaySearch, a division of The NPD Group, Samsung also maintained the lead in the combined global category that includes both LCD and plasma TV unit share.

Panasonic AVC group general manager Masayoshi Fujii indicated that Panasonic's flat panel TV sales volume is estimated will reach 11 million units in 2008 for a 15% global market share. Out of the shipments, six million units will be for plasma display panel (PDP) TVs and five million units will be for LCD TVs. As Panasonic continues to expand its capacity, the company aims to have a 25% share of the global flat panel TV market in 2010, noted Fuji.

Competition in the North American LCD-TV market intensified in the first quarter as the battle for the sales lead tightened up between the top-3 brands, according to iSuppli Corp. Unit shipments for the region's leading brands, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd of South Korea, Sony Corp of Japan and Vizio Inc of the US, were separated by a mere 0.3 of a percentage point in the first quarter, down from 1.8 points in the fourth quarter.

GameStop profit more than doubles
