Panasonic Shows Off Surface-Like Digital Wall

Microsoft's getting some competition for its Surface device. Panasonic is showing off a very Surface-like product it's calling Digital Wall, and it's exactly what it sounds like. While at this point it doesn't appear to offer all the the features of Surface it could also come in much cheaper that the Microsoft version, and for many people that's the key. Hit the jump for a short video of the Digital Wall in action. [Digital World Tokyo]

Panasonic develops Digital Wall surface computer...

Panasonic is working on a wall-mounted surface computer with an enormous touchscreen. What the company aptly calls the Digital Wall is reportedly twice the size of a normal 110-inch display, and allows users to drag folders and windows across it. Unlike the similar Microsoft TouchWall currently under development, which is based on its Surface computing technology, the Digital Wall does not yet support multi-touch inputs, although Panasonic is said to be working on it.

Panasonic Digital Wall takes on Microsoft: no multitouch but bigger

Microsoft Research got some hack-kudos earlier on in the year when they demonstrated their low-cost TouchWall, a potentially far-cheaper (and larger, and vertical) version of their Surface multitouch table.Γ‚ Now Panasonic are here to steal their thunder, with their own imaginatively-titled β€œDigital Wall”.

Olympus and Panasonic Launch Micro Four Thirds System For Smaller, Rangefinder-Like SLRs

Olympus and Panasonic rolled out a new standard for interoperable lenses and camera bodies today in Japan, which means we could see yet another new camera category smashed in between consumer, pro-sumer, con-fessional, and all the rest. The Micro Four Thirds system is basically a slimmed down version of the two companies' Four Thirds system, which allowed member companies to build lenses and bodies that were digital-only and interoperable between brands. And while the new Micro version may not sound like much, it could result in the revival of an all-digital, Leica-like quasi rangefinder system with tons of high-quality lens choices.

Obscura Digital Demos "Minority Report"-Like Display

Barence and other readers sent along word of a demonstration by Obscura Digital of a new technology it's dubbed a multi-touch hologram β€” reminiscent of the display in Minority Report. The demonstration shows a man interacting with holographic images projected before him, moving them around and resizing them. It's only sort of like the Minority Report display, which used hand movements to control elements on a screen. Earlier, Obscura had demoed another take on the Spielbergian technology, a muiti-touch wall.

Show Off Your Holiday Memories

After you've captured tons of great holiday images you'll want to to show them off. The hard part is usually deciding which images to display in a limited space. Rather than face showing off only a few of your images, consider a digital photo frame. Digital photo frames are great for showing off lots of images in a small space. They generally range in size from wallet photo display up to 8x10 display.

Lytic Transglycosylase MltB of Escherichia coli and Its Role in Recycling of Peptidoglycan Strands of Bacterial Cell Wall

The cell wall is an indispensable structure for the survival of bacteria and a target for antibiotics. Peptidoglycan is the major constituent of the cell wall, which is comprised of backbone repeats of N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and N-acetylmuramic acid (NAM). A peptide stem is appended to the NAM unit, which in turn experiences cross-linking with a peptide from another peptidoglycan in the final steps of cell wall assembly. In the normal course of bacterial growth, as much as 60% of the parental cell wall is recycled, a process that is not fully understood. A polymeric cell wall is fragmented by the family of lytic transglycosylases, and certain key fragments are transported to the cytoplasm for recycling. The genes for the six known lytic transglycosylases of Escherichia coli were cloned, and the enzymes were purified in this study.

Not from the creators of WALL-E: Pictor, the wall painting robot

The day when robots take over all of mankind's most tedious chores has just got a little bit closer. The Pictor wall painting robot will climb walls all by itself and paint them using various science-fiction sounding techniques. It'll apparently use a "cleaning laser" to prepare the wall for painting, then use an "airless nozzle" to paint the wall - which apparently results in no "atomised spray". And apparently that is a good thing.

Nanotechnology paper for switchable surfaces

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Generally, a surface either loves a liquid drop (then it's called solvophilic – wetting) or hates it (called solvophobic – repulsion) when it lands, depending on several parameters of both the surface – like geometric roughness asperities or ups and downs and chemical composition – and the liquid – like surface tension or tendency of solvation. When water is the liquid the terms hydrophilic and hydrophobic are used respectively for this and for oil similar terms like oleophilic and oleophobic.
