Panasonic Lumix G

PanasonicPanasonic LUMIX G prototype : During a Panasonic Press event, at which the new Micro Four Thirds system was evaluated and further explained, Panasonic also revealed the development in process of a new Micro FourThirds system camera. Panasonic already claims that it will introduce the world's smallest High Definition system camera in 2009. More information will probably be revealed at the upcoming PMA 2009 in Las Vegas. The prototype referred to as Panasonic LUMIX G, seems quite similar to the new Panasonic LUMIX G1 however, at first sight a number of striking features stand out. Sanyo Takeover Possible by Panasonic

Moriguchi, Osaka, Japan, November 6, 2008 - The Wall Street Journal reports that the pending takeover of Sanyo by Panasonic would yield a "dominant force" in the lithium-ion battery market. Both Sanyo and Panasonic have deals with automakers to provide batteries, but Panasonic's current focus is on nickel metal hydride batteries. According to the WSJ, Sanyo's goal is to capture 40 percent of the lithium-ion battery market for vehicles. Key investors like Goldman Sachs stand to gain in a merger, which WSJ says would "dwarf" Sanyo's second biggest rival, Sony's market share. Current deals to provide hybrid electric vehicle batteries are already in progress between Sanyo and Volkswagen, as well as for Honda's new hybrid electric Insight. -

Australian Internet Filters Have No Real Opt-Out; Only Opt-In To Fewer Filters

We've covered the long history of Australian politicians looking to set up their own censored internet "to protect the children" (of course). The plans have changed over time, but the end goal has always been the same: to force ISPs to block a list of sites provided by the government. In the latest incarnation, the plan supposedly included an "opt-out" option, where a web surfer could specifically ask to opt-out of the filters (effectively asking someone to sign up for a "porn-surfing license"). That, on its own, might scare some people off, but now it turns out that the opt-out isn't really an opt-out. Instead, it's just opting you in to a somewhat less restrictive blacklist. Once again, this idea of mandatory filtering out of "bad" sites on the internet sets a dangerous precedent.

United Kingdom: Sanyo shares up ahead of expected Panasonic deal

Panasonic Corp said it would acquire smaller rival Sanyo Electric Co, creating Japan's top electronics maker and foreshadowing further consolidation in an industry hit by slowing consumer demand. The acquisition, which one analyst estimated could cost about $8.8 billion, would fortify Panasonic's competitiveness in rechargeable batteries and solar power equipment as demand grows for greener energy sources. Panasonic would at the same time become the world's second-largest conglomerate with a major electronics division, behind General Electric and surpassing Hitachi Ltd as the biggest electronics maker in Japan. But the deal carries risks and Panasonic has not said what it might pay for Sanyo, or what it plans to do with the latter's loss-making businesses such as home appliances and microchips.

The batteries in question, manufactured in the same timeframe as those involved in the massive 2006 recall, are in laptops sold by HP, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo, and Acer. Neither Apple nor Sony itself used these batteries in their laptops. This time 100,000 batteries are involved — 65,000 of them sold outside of the US — vs. the 10 million recalled in 2006. The Consumer Product Safety Commission fielded 19 reports of batteries overheating and/or catching fire.

Panasonic AE3000 -- Review of Panasonic's latest 1080p home theater projector

Panasonic's third generation 1080p home theater projector combines a breathtaking array of features with rich, satisfying image quality, and brings it all to market for an MSRP of $3,499. The AE3000 is one of those new benchmark-setting achievements that will cause the industry to rethink pricing on 1080p projectors. One wonders... how long can some brands continue to ask $10,000 and up for 1080p projectors when you can get stunning, high contrast 1080p picture quality and an unsurpassed boatload of features for street prices close to $3,000?
