Sony is expanding its alpha system of accessories to include the new HVL-F58AM flash unit with exceptional features for versatile and flexible external lighting control. This new flash features a new Quick Shift Bounce system. It offers more creative ways to achieve lighting, flash and bounce angles. The flash head can pivot 90 degrees left and right on a horizontal axis in addition to the conventional up and down vertical adjustment. With this system, the camera and flash unit can keep the same orientation regardless of portrait or landscape shooting. This gives a higher degree of flexibility when arranging the direction of light. For example, you can take full advantage of the flash unit’s built-in bounce card even during portrait shots since the flash head can maintain the same orientation as it would in the landscape position.

As many of you venture off on summer vacations, you'll probably be bringing along a digital camera (if you're still using film, stop being stubborn and/or lazy, and buy a digital camera, Grandpa). One of the major things that plague amateur photographers is lighting. Whether it's a lack of lighting, or too much lighting, either can make your pictures look horrid. That's why, when I saw this article on USA Today offering five lighting tips, I thought it would be good to share it with all of you. JagsLive informs us that the electronics retailer Newegg.com is defying New York lawmakers; it has suddenly stopped collecting sales tax from New York online shoppers. The "Amazon tax," which went into effect June 1, requires online merchants to collect sales tax if they have any affiliates in the state. Newegg started out complying with the law on June 1, but stopped collecting taxes for New York on August 21. From Newegg's letter to its customers: "After careful review and consideration, we are pleased to inform you that we have stopped collecting New York sales tax, effective August 21, 2008," reads an email the company tossed at customers late last week, including at least one l

Last fall RIAA got a big win in the courts when Jammie Thomas was ordered to pay over $200,000 in fines just for “making available” music downloads for sharing. Recently, the judge in that case said that he was considering giving that trial a second chance because nationwide cases indicate that solely making the files available for distribution (with no proof that they were actually distributed) isn’t actually a crime. A group of lawyers has submitted a brief for the judge’s review which does indeed suggest that a new trial should be granted because of this issue. This doesn’t mean that Thomas would be in the clear; she could still be found in violation of copyright infringement even if a new trial is granted but she would get a second chance to prove her side of the case.
