Video game consoles dominate the gaming landscape, but these machines are more than just kids' toys. These systems are emerging as critical platforms for the distribution of digital content to the home, particularly video-on-demand (VoD). Nor should their impact on consumers' purchase of consumer electronics such as high-definition TVs and home networks be ignored. Video game consoles are already competing with television, movie theaters and a host of other entertainment options for consumers' limited time and money. In the future, on-demand video delivered via console in conjunction with broadband video has the potential to cannibalize multichannel video subscriptions.

The W3C has decided to take a look at Web video with the aim of making it a first class citizen. This is good news, as up until now, video (and it's companion, audio) have been difficult to place on Web pages, and have caused problems like slow downloads and difficult compatibility. I put up a video the other day, and it streamed great on my computer, but on my brother's Linux box, he had to download the whole thing before it would even play. And he couldn't even download the first version of the video that I made. So, if you've had trouble adding video to your Web pages, you're not the only one. Maybe someday we won't be forced to use the deprecated embed tag, and when we do use the object tag our videos will play.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The worldwide online video market is experiencing dramatic growth, reports In-Stat. Worldwide online video revenue is expected to eclipse US$4.5 billion by 2012, up from $1.2 billion in 2008, the high-tech market research firm says. Purchased/rented videos are expected to offer the most robust growth for online video in the near term, in large part due to an increase in subscription services such as Netflix, which charges a flat monthly fee to deliver an optimal combination of packaged goods and online content that can be viewed on home TV sets. Ad-supported professional video from major TV networks will become a strong revenue contributor by 2012.“What is now seen as a predominantly younger pastime will spread to encompass a wider group of people, in part due to the aging of current online video viewers, but also a

Now the popular photo sharing site allows you to upload video clips One feature that many folks have asked for from Flickr, the popular photos sharing site, is the ability to upload short video clips along with still images. Just about any digital camera produced today allows you to also take short video clips. Flickr now allows you to upload 90 second or less clips and share them on your Flickr photostream. The idea is that with a limit of 90 seconds it is just long enough to post a clip of your child's birthday song, or a students science experiment, but not too long. The limit is set to encourage the uploading of user generated content and not the republication of exisiting video content. As with your Flickr photos, visitors can comment and link to the video, just as they can with still images.

I totally agree with your view on video games. I think the problem is that most parents don't have the experience you and I have with video games and rely on (false) common sense. Because of this lack of education, they are swayed by people like the Marine who writes the anti-video game books, Jack Thompson and conservative media, which is a shame.
