New Study Finds Low Interest In Blu-ray

PHPNerd writes "A new consumer survey recently released chronicles the woes of the winner of the hi-definition format war: nobody wants it. While consumers were very happy to embrace the DVD standard when it came about because it brought a huge jump in quality over VHS, the pros of switching to Blu-ray are not as obvious. From the article: 'In contrast, while half of the respondents to our survey rated Blu-ray's quality as 'much better' than standard DVD, another 40% termed it only 'somewhat better,' and most are very satisfied with the performance of their current DVD players." Another reason cited was that a Blu-ray investment also dictates an HDTV purchase, something consumers are reluctant to do.'" Toshiba may have found a new way to win the Blu ray war? After losing out in a head on HD DVD Vs Blu ray battle Toshiba has developed a low cost DVD player that delivers quality that several journalists in the USA have said was "excellent".

Addonics Zebra Super Multi Blu-ray and HD DVD Drive Review

The problem with the whole format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray is not choosing the winner—that's probably still a year or two away. The problem is that if you pick one format, you'll be missing out on great movies in the other format. Choose Blu-ray, and you miss out on the Matrix Trilogy and Transformers. Chose HD DVD, and no Pirates of the Caribbean for you.

Toshiba to add Internet connectivity to DVD players?

Toshiba to add Internet connectivity to DVD players? Toshiba’s HD DVD format may be dead and forgotten, but the Japanese company just isn’t ready to surrender against Blu-ray and start manufacturing players for the format. Not only are they working on DVD up-scaling technology that will supposedly deliver quality video comparable to that of Blu-ray, but apparently the company is also looking into adding other HD DVD-derived features to DVD players.

Netflix, LG Reveal Streaming Capable Blu-Ray DVD Player

In January, Netflix (NFLX) announced the first of several ambitious partnerships to integrate the software behind their “Watch Now” streaming video service into TV-connected consumer electronics. The deal, they revealed just prior to the Consumer Electronics show, was with LG (LPL) for a set-top box. At the time, the battle for next-gen DVD standards was still ongoing so it was unclear if “set top box” meant we might see a DVD player (HD DVD or Blu-ray) or some other device. Little clarifying information was provided. Today, long after the standards war ended, the mail-order DVD pioneer and the South Korean electronics giant filled in the blanks with detail.

Sony Blu-ray player is no PS3

(CNET) -- Sony has been the public face of Blu-ray since the format's inception, and while most of the focus during the bitter Blu-ray vs. HD DVD format war was on the company's PlayStation 3, Sony has been making stand-alone Blu-ray players from the start, beginning with the $1,000 BDP-S1.

Toshiba Forgets HD-DVD. Remembers DVD

Toshiba got its clock cleaned by Sony by supporting the HD DVD format over Sony's Blu-ray discs. But the next-generation video war really didn't have any winners. Even with HD DVDs out of the running, Sony can't seem to sell enough Blu-ray players to afford enough red ink to print a chart of how bad they're doing with the format; if it wasn't for the Blu-ray player in the Playstation 3, next to no one would have one. And now Toshiba's back, and angling towards fighting the next-gen hi-def wars one more time: Let's go back to watching standard DVDs, played back in Toshiba's Extended Detail Enhancement players (XDE).

Toshiba explores up-sampling, internet-ready DVD unit...

As the dust from the HD DVD/Blu-ray war settles, Toshiba is allegedly not adopting the victorious Blu-ray standard, but instead is expected to pursue DVD up-sampling and Internet-enabled players. TG Daily writes that Toshiba has not released specific plans or future machine specifications, but believes that the players would be based around its SpursEngine 1000 processor for upsampling – a 'lite' version of the Cell BE CPU. The observations come as the Toshiba-chaired DVD Forum approved the logo for "DVD Download/DL"

Sony to open up Blu-ray as a "social network"

Sounds a bit like someone is mixing up their internet buzzwords. The head of Sony Electronics' US division, Stan Glasgow, has some interesting ideas for the future of Blu-ray, revealing that "We're going to have to open [Blu-ray] up as a social network--not just contributions of Sony and other Blu-ray partners."
