Spanish Broadcasting System Goes on Air in HD With Sony's XDCAM System

PARK RIDGE, N.J., Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- When Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) went on the air recently from its new studio, the Miami-based radio, TV and internet network did more than unveil a new look. It became one of the first Hispanic networks to implement full HD production, the network said. SBS' Mega TV network is broadcasting out of a newly redesigned, integrated studio. The heart of SBS' new HD production capabilities is the Sony XDCAM(R) HD system. The network has standardized its production and program delivery on the newest version of the Sony optical technology: the 2/3 inch PDW-700 camcorder and the PDW-HD1500 deck, as well as several PDW-U1 drives which will be used at editing stations throughout the facility. Yahoo! Inc. announced that it will offer users the ability to opt-out of customized advertising on Yahoo.com. This new option expands Yahoo!'s existing opt-out program for customized advertising served by Yahoo! on third party networks. Yahoo! announced the new opt-out capability as part of its response to a Congressional inquiry about customization sent to 33 companies from the House Energy and Commerce Committee. This new opt-out capability is expected to be available for consumers by the end of August. Users will be able to access the opt-out in the Yahoo! privacy center, which is linked on the home page and nearly every page on the Yahoo! network.

The New York Times is talking up a new experiment that Sony is running with the movie Hancock. Before the movie is even available for rental, owners of a specific Sony television with a special "internet package" (only $299) will be able to download the movie for a fee (as if the $299 weren't already enough). The New York Times piece seems to go out of its way to make Sony look like it's made some huge breakthrough with this offering, in part because it brings together the content side of the business with the consumer electronics side -- two groups that not only rarely spoke, but were often at odds with each other on certain projects. On that part, perhaps it is a step forward -- but for the overall market, this seems like a big step backwards.

Sony Pulls Update Following PS3 Firmware Fiasco

Sony are now confident that the issues with 2.40 have been resolved, and have extended their apologies to the Playstation community for any inconvenience caused. 2.41 doesn't add any additional features over 2.40, and Sony hasn't said what it will do about the consoles that were bricked by the 2.40 firmware yet.

Newegg Defies New York Sales Tax Law

JagsLive informs us that the electronics retailer Newegg.com is defying New York lawmakers; it has suddenly stopped collecting sales tax from New York online shoppers. The "Amazon tax," which went into effect June 1, requires online merchants to collect sales tax if they have any affiliates in the state. Amazon is complying but has sued the state on constitutional grounds. Overstock.com dropped all of its New York affiliates and then joined the Amazon lawsuit. Newegg started out complying with the law on June 1, but stopped collecting taxes for New York on August 21. From Newegg's letter to its customers: "After careful review and consideration, we are pleased to inform you that we have stopped collecting New York sales tax, effective August 21, 2008," reads an email the company tossed at customers late last week, including at least one l
