Milpitas, California is one of those small cities that was excited to get a citywide wireless network from Earthlink a couple of years back and then had to agree to a return of the network when Earthlink’s plans collapsed earlier this year. When the city accepted the network back, its plan was to use it solely as a municipal network. However, a new agreement is pending which would once again offer free wi-fi to about 7000 users per month. The agreement would allow for the formation of a collaborative group called Silicon Valley Unwired which includes the city, Google and I-Net Solutions (the group that provides Wi-Fi for Mountain View in cooperation with Google). This non-profit group would work together to offer the network’s service at no additional cost to the city using the infrastructure put into place by Earthlink.

Sending out a CD/DVD to a duplicating service can cost hundreds of dollars—and requires a minimum order, usually in the neighborhood of several hundred copies, which is not a practical solution for most of us. Yes, there are inkjets capable of printing on pre-labeled discs, but one thing they can’t do is duplicate CDs and DVDs—and the process is limited to one disc at a time. And in this day and age, when we’re handing out discs with pictures, videos, and music like they were Halloween candy, it would really help to have some means of efficiently duplicating discs and printing labels at home, in our spare time—on the same machine. There are pricey machines that will do the job, but if you don’t mind the no-frills approach and are willing to spend under $500, then consider the Aleratec 1:3 DVD/CD Tower Publisher HLS.

As network switch latencies fall and the architecture for processor coherency migrates from a frontside bus to a coherent network, technology is driving towards the next generation of distributed processing, which extends a microprocessor’s coherent interconnect onto a standard network, enabling efficient, high performance inter-processor communication for x86 systems over standard commodity switches. New MicroNetwork interconnect technologies are emerging, connecting Coherent HyperTransport over either Infiniband or Ethernet. These chips can support dual Coherent HyperTransport links and dual connections to either Infiniband or Ethernet. This innovative technology can enable dynamic, high performance distributed processing using shared memory, delivering unprecedented scalability and flexibility on commodity systems.

snydeq writes "A source with direct knowledge of San Francisco's IT infrastructure has tipped off Paul Venezia to the real story behind Terry Childs' lockout of San Francisco's network, providing a detailed account of the city's FiberWAN, interdepartmental politics, and Terry Childs himself. Childs pleaded not guilty to charges of tampering yesterday and is being held on $5 million bail. According to the source, Childs' purview was limited to the city's FiberWAN — a network he himself built and, believing no one competent enough to touch the network but himself, guarded religiously, sharing details with no one, including routing configuration and log-in information. Childs was so concerned about the network's security that he refused even to write router and switch configurations to flash.

elucido writes "OFF, or the Owner-Free Filesystem is a distributed filesystem in which everything is stored in reference to randomized data blocks, as opposed to a 1:1 copy of the original data being inserted. The creators of the Owner-Free Filesystem have coined a new term to define the network: A brightnet. Nobody shares any copyrighted files, and therefore nobody needs to hide away. OFF provides a platform through which data can be stored (publicly or otherwise) in a discreet, distributed manner. The system allows for personal privacy because data (blocks) being transferred from peer to peer do not bear any relation to the original data. Incidentally, no data passing through the network can be considered copyrighted because the means by which it is represented is truly random.

There have been a series of lawsuits over the years concerning whether or not magazines could create CD-ROM archives of their magazines without having to pay all their freelance authors again. The court rulings have been mixed, to say the least -- with some ruling one way, and others ruling the other. The end result was some rather twisted logic that suggested magazine publishers could republish magazines via CD-ROM, but only if they did so in an incredibly annoying fashion.

Both technologies bring traditional telephony applications (voice and fax) into data network environments, allowing organizations to transport phone or fax calls over an IP data network.
