Back in 2005, we wrote about Sun's doomed plans to offer an "open source DRM" solution. Not surprisingly, that went nowhere fast. Last year, Tim Lee took apart the claims of "Marlin," a supposedly new "open source DRM" solution. As Tim noted, open source and DRM are a contradiction in terms. So, it's not clear why last week some were celebrating the latest version of Marlin. As some pointed out, just because it's open source, doesn't mean that it should be "blessed" by the tech crowd. DRM is about destroying options for what you can do with bits. Open source is about multiplying the options. To mix them together makes no sense.

Barence writes "An open-source digital rights management (DRM) scheme says it's ready to supplant Apple and Microsoft as the world's leading copy protection solution. Marlin, which is backed by companies such as Sony and Samsung, has just announced a new partner program that aims to drive the DRM system into more consumer devices. 'It works in a way that doesn't hold consumers hostage,' Talal Shamoon told PC Pro. 'It allows you to protect and share content in the home, in a way that people own the content, not the devices.' When asked about the biggest problem of DRM — that customers hate it — he argued that 'the biggest problem with DRM is people have implemented it badly. Make DRM invisible and people will use it.'"

IconThe mounting irregularities of closed-source proprietary e-voting systems clearly show the need for a new approach to securing elections in the U.S. -- one centered on the use of open source technologies, writes Paul Venezia. 'It's time for us to make good on the promise of open elections and open our e-voting systems as well,' Venezia writes, outlining the technical blueprint for a cheap, secure, open source e-voting system. The call for open voting systems has grown louder as of late, with several projects, such as Pvote and the Open Voting Consortium, demonstrating how the voting booth could benefit from open source code. Such systems are already securing elections in Australia and Brazil.

HILTON TARRANT: South African consumers are under pressure, but that's not stopping global electronics giant Sony from opening branded retail stores in the country. The first Sony Centre on the African continent will open at Menlyn Park east of Pretoria tomorrow morning. It's not the first such store in Gauteng. HP recently opened a global pilot store, The HP Experience, in Sandton City and there are other international players lining up to open up their own retail shops in the country ahead of 2010. The Sony Centre joins over 200 others around the world and, considering that the company is a manufacturer, it typically looks for partners with experience in retail to actually run the stores. MD of Sony South Africa, Matthew Lang, explains this strategy.

I had to suppress a smirk last week when I saw a kinder, gentler DRM (digital rights management) rear its ugly head over on Slashdot. The open-source world has long hated DRM, but perhaps open-source DRM is somehow blessed?

Open-source databases have been available in the enterprise database market for several years now. Until recently, they didnt come anywhere close to competing with the major database platforms such as SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase, and DB2. However, we are now seeing a proliferation of open-source databases in the enterprise database market that are being used with web applications and other portals in the enterprise. Recently, I asked Noel Yuhanna, a principal analyst for Forrester Research, what his thoughts were about open-source databases in the SQL Server market.

SonySony A900 SLR review : Although being the only model in the DSLR assortment of Sony, the Alpha 100 was an amazing success. Simply ruling out all prejudice which sprung mainly from the more traditional world of photography. Six months later, Sony launched a threesome new Alpha DSLR cameras (Alpha 200/300/350) with which Sony was able to deliver an entirely new line of Alpha cameras. Only one DSLR was missing in the line-up; the Sony A900, a high resolution DSLR camera that would establish Sony as a serious DSLR manufacturer belonging to the top 3 ranking. Read our full
