DIY VHS USB hub fun nostalgic project apparently: related news

DIY VHS USB hub: fun, nostalgic project, apparently

Given that you can pick up a four port USB hub for about five quid these days, there's no economic value in converting an old VHS cassette tape into one (particularly as you need to buy a USB hub to make it work anyway, but for sheer nostalgia, and for the dream of clogging up your desk with a great big hub rather than a tiny one, this project could be for you.

The Principles of Project Management

zedguy writes "Ask someone what 'project management' is and you're liable to get a few blank stares — it's one of those fields people have heard of, but probably have problems pinning down a definition. So that is what the first section of the book does: provides a definition that can be summed up as applying tools and skills to complete a project. That then leads to what exactly is a "project": a set of tasks with a time-frame and goal of somehow adding value. So yes, the introduction does involve a fair bit of terminology that isn't going to be familiar to many readers coming from a coder's background, but there's a helpful appendix that lays out many of the terms. Just as important, the introduction explains what project management is not, some of the misconceptions and why it's good to know.

Open Source Cards Project Meets Objections

An attempt to create an open-source set of public safety protocol cards has run into a legal setback after a commercial company issued an Internet cease-and-desist order that claimed copyright infringement. The cards were developed by the Open ISES Project, which has also developed an open-source CAD software application, and posted on-line just last March. However, last week the group says it received a letter from attorneys representing Medical Priority Consultants, who apparently stated that the open source cards infringed on the company's copyrights. In response, the Project took down the cards, and issued a statement explaining their actions. "We are hoping that we can work out an agreement with them. However, until such time, we had to take the site and associated files down," said Robert Austin, who manages the Project.

Texas To Build $4.93B Wind-Power Project

Hugh Pickens points out a story in the NYTimes about Texas' $4.93 billion wind-power transmission project. One of the major goals of the project is to improve electrical throughput to the population centers. Current transmission lines are unable to handle all of the power generated by Texas' wind fields. State citizens will be paying slightly more to help cover the cost, though the project is expected to eventually lower the cost to consumers. Quoting: "The lines can handle 18,500 megawatts of power, enough for 3.7 million homes on a hot day when air-conditioners are running. 'The project will ease a bottleneck that has become a major obstacle to development of the wind-rich Texas Panhandle and other areas suitable for wind generation. The lack of transmission has been a fundamental issue in Texas, and it's becoming more and more of an is

Rare Tour of Sun Microsystems' "Wonderland"

Surinder Kahai writes "Last week I had the rare opportunity to see an emerging virtual world called Wonderland, the product of an open source project, Project Wonderland, sponsored by Sun Microsystems. The tour was given by Nicole Yankelovich, Principal Investigator of the Collaborative Environments Project at Sun Microsystems. Some of the key aspects of this dynamic virtual world are voice communication with distance attenuation, the ability to join a Wonderland meeting through a regular phone if a computer is not handy, and the sharing of applications such as Open Office. Wonderland is currently being used by educational facilities and can be used by other organizations for virtual collaboration. Since the project is an Open Source project, users can tweak the tools available to suit their particular purpose.

The first thirty-minute webinar, "Project Initiation: Different Techniques To Start Your Project Off Right," is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2008. The webinar will be held three times to accommodate RoboHead's global client base. Succeeding monthly topics include "Insider Time-Saving Tips" and "Schedules: Keeping Your Project and Team on Track."

Reader Question: How do you get what you need from clients?

I feel exploited when a customer takes to much time to send me all the images, texts, videos, ideas etc that I need to complete the project. In the meantime, severals changes are asked from the client. A web site project could take 3 months! Eating peanut butter 3 months in a row is not very interesting (it’s juste an exemple of how poor I can be cause I wait for my money). A project could be finished in 2 short weeks (that never happened to me)… Even if I charge 40% of the total price at the beginning, I always feel that I’m more interested in finishing the project that the customer is. Sometimes I wonder if I’m in the good job in my life, but I prefer to be poor sometimes than having a boss. I’m open to any ideas to not feel exploited, and sorry if I’m definatly not in the topic, that’s what I understood from the article, feeling exploi
