Blu-ray Sales Haven't Grown Since HD-DVD Dropped Out

If you thought - as I did - that HD-DVD waving the white flag meant that Blu-ray would see a big boost in sales, we'd both be wrong. According to the NPD Group - a market research firm - Blu-ray hardware sales dropped a stunning 40% from January to February this year, and the February to March figures weren't much better, as sales only grew by 2%. It seems as though the only good news coming out of the Blu-ray camp is that Playstation 3 consoles have been selling at a respectable rate, making up 85% of all Blu-ray players sold. Among the top reasons that the next-gen DVD format hasn't exactly lit up cash registers are consumer satisfaction with current standard and upconverting DVD players, and the significant financial investment necessary to go Blu.

DVD Sales Drop Faster Than Blu-ray Can Rise

Others agree that Hollywood and its partners may have squabbled too long: Blu-ray's victory in the format war may be too late to salvage the sale of DVDs. Upconverting HDMI DVD players: Fact vs. fiction

I've been meaning to write this column for a while, but hadn't been able to pull the trigger until a couple of comments related to HD DVD's demise--and the apparent rise of upconverting DVD players--raised my ire. Perhaps you've noticed that a lot of HD DVD owners have been commenting on how they don't regret their purchases because once the studios soon stop releasing HD DVDs, they'll be left with a good upconverting DVD player that didn't cost them too much. Also, in exiting the format war, Toshiba's chief executive, Atsutoshi Nishida, suggested that Toshiba would combat Blu-ray by selling upconverting DVD players that cost less than Blu-ray players and are just as good.
