AMD Writes Down $880 Million Following Inability to Execute in Consumer Electronics Business.

Advanced Micro Devices has written down another $880 million from their goodwill and intangible assets in the recently ended quarter quarter, the company said in a statement with Securities and Exchange Commission. The firm said that its handheld and DTV businesses were not demonstrating expected financial results.

AMD posts a loss of $1.19 Billion for Q2

AMD posted a loss of $1.19 billion for Q2 on revenue of $1.349 billion. That figure is 7% below Q1'08 and 3% higher than their performance from a year ago. That loss includes an $880 million goodwill writedown as a result of their ATI acquisition. AMD announced that they divested themselves of their consumer electronics business (formerly ATI's DTV/handheld division), although they didn't state if that is the result of a pending sale of the unit. Excluding the goodwill charge, AMD's Q2 loss was $269 million, which is much better than Q2'07 when AMD lost $531 million.

AMD to take $758 million charge for Q2

Today AMD announced it will take $948 million in charges for Q2, the news has sent AMD's stock below $5. The bulk of the charges ($880 million) came from the continuing decline in goodwill value of their ATI acquisition, more specifically ATI's DTV/handheld unit. If you recall last year AMD took a $1.6 billion dollar hit because of this. An additional $32 million charge is going towards severance packages for employees who were laid off earlier this year, while the final $36 million is associated with a decline in value of securities as well as AMD's Spansion stock.

Global Consumer Electronics Will Grow to $700 Billion Next Year

Worldwide revenue for consumer electronics (CE) will grow nearly 10% in 2008 and will hit the $700 billion mark by 2009, according to new data from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the GfK Group. According to the CEA/GfK Worldwide Consumer Electronics Sales & Forecast, consumers will spend $42 billion more on CE products in 2009 than in 2008. Countries with fast-growing economies and large emerging middle classes, such as the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), will lead the way in new CE revenue growth. By 2009, China will account for nearly 15% of global CE revenue, trailing only North America (22% share) and Western Europe (16% share).
