PunkOfLinux writes "From The NYTimes comes news that TiVo and Amazon have reached an agreement to allow consumers to purchase products from Amazon through their television sets using their TiVo remote control. TiVo will launch the new service to consumers by merchandising products related to several high-profile programs, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Colbert Report, and Burn Notice. Broadband-connected Series2, Series3, and TiVo HD DVRs will be able to take advantage of the new feature." This sounds like the latest incarnation of the dream of television executives who in the early '90s talked about the "information superhighway," before it was clear that the Internet was going to fill that role. What they envisioned was "interactive TV," i.

Amazon Advertising Invading Tivo Tivo is doing everything it can to remain viable, and in recent years that has meant advertisements in the onscreen menus. Personally I find them to be unobtrusive. Its not like Tivo is making you watch ads before viewing a show. But the ability to fast forward through commercials has long been a sticking point with advertisers and networks with Tivo. So the company has made some compromises.

TiVo's removed their Series3 DVR from the main shop, leaving only the TiVo Series2 at $150 and TiVo HD at $300. What's the upshot of this? To us, it seems like they're either phasing out the Series3 entirely in favor of the cheaper-to-produce TiVo HD, or they're liquidating the units for an upcoming Series4 featuring all those bad ass things we wanted. If you still adamantly want a TiVo Series3, you'll have to look elsewhere, since the entry buried deep inside the store is out of stock. [TiVo via Engadget]

Reaction across the Web has generally been quite positive, with most feeling that the move further solidifies Amazon's status as a leader in cloud computing. IN RESPONSE TO THE BOOKLOCKER / AMAZON ANTITRUST CASE: What self-publishing services like BookLocker need to come to terms with ... is that Amazon is a business and like any business ... must make a profit. Amazon has been accepting an influx of self-published books that don''t offer any profit. Amazon''s BookSurge (for the record) also participates in this influx ... the only difference being that BookSurge makes a profit for Amazon. Many self-publishing services offer an extremely minimal wholesale discount that (after the wholesale distribution source like Ingram takes its cut) leaves the reseller (like Amazon) with little to zero profit margin. Why would any retailer carry stock that they cannot make a profit on? BookLocker is among those self-publishing services that do not provide a reasonable wholesale discount on its books.

Seattle-based Amazon Web Services, the web services subsidiary of Amazon.com, said today that it has launched a new set of tools for the firm's Amazon Mechanical Turk services. Mechanical Turk is a play on "The Turk," a late 18th century chess playing machine which turned out to be powered by a hidden operator. Amazon's service allows companies to tap human workers to get tasks done. The firm said it has added a new, web-based graphical interface for helping businesses outsource work through the service. The new interface also includes templates for different kind of work available through the service; previously, the service was only available via APIs which required programming expertise. Amazon's Mechanical Turk services are being used for such things as image tagging, filtering, and other tasks which humans do better than computers.
