SAN FRANCISCO, May 5 -- Sun Microsystems Inc. today announced two new offerings that will significantly expand customer choice by providing users with access to Sun's innovative open source software running on the Amazon Web Services platform. Sun Microsystems used the opening day of its CommunityOne open source developer conference to release its OpenSolaris Operating System and make it available on the Amazon Web Services platform. CorporalKlinger writes "CNET News is reporting that Amazon's US website, Amazon.com, has been unreachable since 10:30 AM PDT today. As of posting, visiting www.amazon.com produces an 'Http/1.1 Service Unavailable' message. According to CNET, "Based on last quarter's revenue of $4.13 billion, a full-scale global outage would cost Amazon more than $31,000 per minute on average." Some of Amazon's international websites still appear to be working, and some pages on the US Amazon.com site load if accessed using HTTPS instead of HTTP."

Amazon's EC2 Having Problems With Spam and Malware

jamie pointed out a story about the recent problems Amazon's EC2 service has been having with malware and spam. "EC2 space is now actively blocked by Outblaze, and has been listed by Spamhaus in their PBL list [...] However as Seth Breidbart noted in the comments, 'note that Amazon will terminate the instance. That means that the spammer just creates another instance, which gets a new IP address, and continues spamming.' True enough - as described, instance termination simply isn't good enough."

Amazon Sues New York Over Sales Tax Law

Amazon.com has sued New York State, over a law which forces online retailers to collect sales tax on shipments to the state. Amazon filed the complaint last Friday in the State Supreme Court in Manhattan. The move comes after the approval of a section of the New York State Tax Law which requires Internet retailers -- including those who do not have a physical presence in the state -- to collect taxes on behalf of the state. In particular, the law targets affiliates of Amazon.com and other e-commerce retailers, claiming that a retailer must collect taxes if they use any "in-state entity" to directly or indirectly refer customers to a retailer.
