Seattle-based Amazon Web Services, the web services subsidiary of Amazon.com, said today that it has launched a new set of tools for the firm's Amazon Mechanical Turk services. Mechanical Turk is a play on "The Turk," a late 18th century chess playing machine which turned out to be powered by a hidden operator. Amazon's service allows companies to tap human workers to get tasks done. The firm said it has added a new, web-based graphical interface for helping businesses outsource work through the service. The new interface also includes templates for different kind of work available through the service; previously, the service was only available via APIs which required programming expertise. Amazon's Mechanical Turk services are being used for such things as image tagging, filtering, and other tasks which humans do better than computers.

jamie pointed out a story about the recent problems Amazon's EC2 service has been having with malware and spam. "EC2 space is now actively blocked by Outblaze, and has been listed by Spamhaus in their PBL list [...] However as Seth Breidbart noted in the comments, 'note that Amazon will terminate the instance. That means that the spammer just creates another instance, which gets a new IP address, and continues spamming.' True enough - as described, instance termination simply isn't good enough."

Amazon.com (NSDQ: AMZN) is launching its new streaming online movie and video service tomorrow...the new service is called, surprise surprise, Amazon Video on Demand. Some details of the service were inadvertently pre-announced by CEO Jeff Bezos at the D conference in May. It will be available at Amazon.com/VOD when it launches...well, not yet fully. Turns out it is only launching in beta now, and will be accessible to a limited number of invited Amazon.com customers on Thursday before it opens more broadly to other users later this summer.

The big news of the week has been Amazon's launch of its Elastic Block Store (EBS) offering. Amazon EBS works alongside Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service to improve the ability to allocate storage volumes in cloud computing. Reaction across the Web has generally been quite positive, with most feeling that the move further solidifies Amazon's status as a leader in cloud computing. (Anyone remember when Amazon was just an internet book seller?)

IN RESPONSE TO THE BOOKLOCKER / AMAZON ANTITRUST CASE: What self-publishing services like BookLocker need to come to terms with ... is that Amazon is a business and like any business ... must make a profit. Amazon has been accepting an influx of self-published books that don''t offer any profit. Amazon''s BookSurge (for the record) also participates in this influx ... the only difference being that BookSurge makes a profit for Amazon. Many self-publishing services offer an extremely minimal wholesale discount that (after the wholesale distribution source like Ingram takes its cut) leaves the reseller (like Amazon) with little to zero profit margin. Why would any retailer carry stock that they cannot make a profit on? BookLocker is among those self-publishing services that do not provide a reasonable wholesale discount on its books.

"These instances are Linux-based and can run any application or software you want. You are in control of each instance. The EC2 environment itself is built on top of the open source Xen hypervisor, which was initially developed at the University of Cambridge. Amazon lets you create Amazon machine images (AMIs) that act as the templates for your instances. Access to the instances can be controlled by specifying the permissions. You can do anything you want with them; the only restriction is that they need to be Linux-based images. Recently, Open Solaris support was announced by Amazon in a partnership with Sun, but the vast majority of the free and commercially available pre-built images for EC2 are based on Linux."
