Robust Latin American E Commerce Growth in 2007: related news

Robust Latin American E-Commerce Growth in 2007

Jun 26 2008 : In 2007, consumer-to-business e-commerce transactions in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) rose by 40 percent to US$10.9 billion, according to a Visa Latin America and Caribbean study. The increase was largely driven by sustained economic prosperity, advances in technology, and changes in consumer behavior, Visa says.

E-commerce in Latin America to surpass $16 billion this year, Visa says

Retail e-commerce in Latin America, including travel and tourism, rose to nearly $11 billion in 2007, up from about $5 billion in 2005 and $7.78 billion in 2006, and is expected to surpass $16 billion this year and reach nearly $30 billion by 2010, Visa Inc. says in a new study, “B2C Electronic Commerce in Latin America and the Caribbean: Beating All Odds.”

Report: E-Commerce Is Recession-Resistant

A report put out today by Sanford Bernstein analyst Jeffrey Lindsey claims the same disparity in growth between the U.S. and the rest of the world exists in e-commerce as exists in economic growth overall. Online retail commerce will rise only 14.3% in the U.S. in 2008 (still not a bad showing, I would imagine), but 26.5% overseas, writes Lindsey. That adds up to 21.5% combined, and even if economic growth slows globally, Lindsey expects e-commerce numbers to prove relatively resilient.

More on e-commerce

This is the chart I was doing when I found the mistake in the previous post. It shows the share of retail sales growth coming from e-commerce (leaving out gasoline station and fuel oil dealers). Until recently, e-commerce accounted for a relatively small share of retail sales growth. In the first quarter, however, e-commerce was 36% of growth

Gap between domestic and cross-border e-commerce grows wider, says EU report

EU Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva today announced the results of a new EU wide survey on e-commerce and cross border trade. The figures show that even though e-commerce is taking off at national level, cross-border e-commerce is failing to keep pace. From 2006 to 2008, the share of all EU consumers that have bought at least one item over the internet has increased significantly (from 27% to 33%) whilst cross border e-commerce is stable (6% to 7%). The pattern is similar for those with internet access at home - 56% of consumers with internet at home have made a purchase (in any country including their own) by e-commerce compared to 50% in 2006, while only 13% (of those with internet access at home) made a cross-border e-commerce purchase compared to 12% in 2006.

Economy stunts e-commerce growth

AUG. 7 | Growth in consumers’ online spending has slowed dramatically in 2008 as a result of price increases and the soft economy, according to ComScore. E-commerce growth rates remain significantly stronger, however, than bricks-and-mortar retail, where growth has been negative throughout 2008 when adjusted for inflation.

E-commerce sales up 7% at wedding products retailer The Knot

Wedding products retailer The Knot Inc. has reported e-commerce revenue of $13.4 million for the second quarter ended June 30, a 7% increase over $12.5 million for the same period in 2007. Online sales growth, however, beat overall sales growth: The retailer reported revenue of $28.7 million for the second quarter of 2008, a negligible rise over net revenue of $28.5 million for the second quarter of 2007. The merchant blames the stagnation in part on the economy.

Clear strategy key for SaaS e-commerce success

Companies seeking hosted e-commerce services will find many different providers and products. So, to make good purchasing decisions, business and IT managers must first establish clear goals for their online stores, Gartner said Wednesday. Once companies have identified the requirements for carrying out their e-commerce strategies, they can then properly evaluate the different SaaS (software-as-a-service) vendors and offerings on the market. Gartner is issuing this advice in the recently published study "SaaS Impact on E-Commerce" after finding that, by 2013, 90 percent of e-commerce sites will subscribe to at least one such service. At a very basic level, a company must make sure that the SaaS provider it selects offers the e-commerce capabilities the business needs, at the proper scale and level of sophistication.

Selling Online with Drupal e-Commerce

Michael J. Ross writes "Many Web developers wish to create e-commerce sites that also support collaborative editing of content, community forums, and other features that can increase traffic to the sites. But most shopping cart products do not include those capabilities, or, if such third-party add-ons exist, they may be quite limited in functionality. Similarly, most if not all content management systems (CMSs) lack native e-commerce capabilities. Yet that barrier is being overcome, because a handful of e-commerce modules have been created for the most popular CMSs. Perhaps the most promising pairing, at this time, is Drupal and the e-Commerce module — a combination covered in the book Selling Online with Drupal e-Commerce by Michael Peacock.
